Joe Lycett has opened up about a heart-stopping moment in his life when he had to rush his 16-month-old son to the hospital, giving a rare glimpse into his private family life. The comedian, known for keeping his personal life under wraps, shocked fans in 2024 when he revealed he had become a father with his long-term girlfriend, Denise.

In an exclusive appearance on Katherine Ryan’s What’s My Age Again Podcast, Joe shared the emotional experience of a health scare involving his young son, whom he affectionately calls “the punisher.”

“The punisher was poorly recently, we had to go into hospital,” Joe began, revealing how the family had to deal with the frightening situation. “I got a real sense of, ‘I would take any pain that you have, a thousand times over. I would bulldozer through a nursery to save you. I would do whatever it takes,” Joe explained, reflecting the overwhelming love he feels for his little one.

The family’s stressful trip to Birmingham Children’s Hospital included a parking mishap, with Joe humorously recounting: “So, the punisher was ill. I drove to A&E, parked up, took a picture of the Ringo number, but didn’t do it straight away, like, ‘Oh, I’ll just wait while my son was unwell.’” Joe then realized he had to pay for parking while his son was being assessed, but unfortunately ended up getting a parking ticket for not doing it in time.
Joe also took the opportunity to reflect on fatherhood and the drastic change it brought to his life. Despite once believing he’d never have kids, Joe admitted, “I always said I didn’t think I’d have kids but if one happened, then I’d have a really good go at it.” He explained that being in a stable, loving relationship shifted his mindset, and having a child became an inevitability.
Lycett, who is notoriously private about his personal life, discussed why he and his family keep their lives out of the public eye. “For the punisher, it’s up to him if he wants to do that later and be in the public eye. Because there is an inherent risk in being known, having your face known,” he explained. “If I end up doing something appalling, he can change his surname and no one knows who he is.”
Joe’s partner, Denise, remains mostly anonymous, with Joe sharing that she works with vulnerable people and has no desire to be in the limelight. He emphasized how important it is to protect her privacy and career.
Despite Joe’s outgoing and often outrageous public persona, when it comes to family, he prefers to keep them away from the media storm. “It’s weird to do what we do, and she has no desire to be a part of it,” Joe concluded, showing a rare moment of vulnerability as a father.
