The heartbreaking death of Emmerdale star Frazer Hammill, 41, has been confirmed as suicide following an inquest that revealed he took his own life after being arrested by police.

Hammill, known for his roles as a prison guard in Emmerdale and a police officer in Happy Valley, was found dead at his home on December 30, just a day after being questioned by Lancashire Police. He had left a note on his neighbor’s door with the keys to his home, warning them not to enter but to call emergency services instead.
Although custody officers reported that Hammill appeared to be in “good spirits” when he left the police station, the actor’s tragic passing left his family in shock. His sister Caroline revealed that the family had no idea about his struggles, and he had not shown signs of being “low enough to end his life.”
The inquest confirmed his cause of death as hanging, and the coroner stated that it was a deliberate act, planned with intention.
Paying tribute, Hammill’s Emmerdale co-star Amy Walsh expressed her grief on social media, saying, “There are no words” alongside heartbroken emojis. The John Godber Theatre Company also posted a tribute to the late actor, praising his talent and loving nature. Friends and co-stars, including Lamin Touray, also shared heartfelt messages, remembering Hammill’s incredible kindness and professionalism.
Despite his ongoing success and strong career in theatre and TV, including roles in Abraham’s Point and Shed Convention, Hammill’s death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Frazer Hammill’s untimely passing highlights the importance of mental health awareness, as friends and family continue to cope with the shock of losing a beloved actor and friend.
