Sara Cox has officially been named the new host of BBC Radio 2’s coveted Breakfast Show, succeeding Scott Mills, who was controversially sacked last month. The move, which had been anticipated after Sara’s stellar career at the station, was confirmed just days after a shocking revelation about Scott’s departure.
The announcement marks the next major step for Sara, 51, who has long been seen as the “heir apparent” for the role. A source close to the BBC revealed: “Sara has been handed the top job, and it’s official – she is the new host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show. This is something the BBC always had lined up for her, and she couldn’t be more thrilled to take on this iconic role.”
Sara, known for her quick wit and infectious personality, expressed her excitement about the new chapter. “There aren’t enough adjectives to describe how I feel about being trusted with such an iconic show. Ecstatic, honoured, and incredibly chuffed are just the start,” she said. “It’s been a dream to host the Breakfast Show ever since I joined Radio 2, and it feels like a full circle moment.”
Sara’s journey with Radio 2 began in 2012 when she first joined as a cover host. Her rise through the ranks continued when she became the permanent host of Sounds of the 80s in 2013, followed by taking over from Simon Mayo as the drivetime presenter in 2019. Her success has not been limited to her hosting role; in 2025, she raised a record £11.5 million for Children in Need by completing the Great Northern Marathon Challenge.
Radio 2’s Head of Programming, Helen Thomas, shared her delight over the appointment: “Sara is adored by her millions of listeners, and I’m confident she will build a fantastic rapport with the Breakfast audience. I’ve seen her in action on the Breakfast Show before, and I can’t wait to hear her first show.”

Sara’s new role comes after Scott Mills was dismissed from the Breakfast Show following the resurfacing of a police investigation related to alleged sex offences. As a result, Mills was also removed from his other BBC roles, including his position on Eurovision coverage and his new podcast venture.
Sara, who currently hosts the teatime slot on Radio 2, will step into her new role later this year. Fans are already eager to hear her signature blend of humour and warmth, and Sara herself is ready to make her mark on the legendary show. “I can’t wait to wake the nation up with the biggest, most fun breakfast show ever,” she added.
The change has sent waves through the broadcasting world, with many predicting a new era for Radio 2’s Breakfast Show as Sara Cox takes the reins. Her dynamic personality and proven track record in radio make her a fitting successor to the role that has long been considered one of the most prestigious positions in British radio.
