Hollywood star Nicole Kidman has opened up in an emotional and deeply personal moment, revealing the sad news that her beloved mother, Janelle, is currently facing ongoing health challenges.
The Nine Perfect Strangers actress is now back in Australia, putting family first during what appears to be a difficult and uncertain time. While Nicole chose not to disclose the exact nature of her mother’s condition, she made it clear that her priority right now is being present — offering care, comfort, and love.
Speaking candidly during an appearance on the Fresh Air podcast, the 54-year-old explained her decision to return home. “We’re down here primarily to take care of my mother and to have her surrounded by her grandchildren,” she shared — a simple yet powerful statement that highlights just how important family has become in this chapter of her life.
Despite the circumstances, Nicole also revealed a touching moment she recently shared with her mother — a rare outing that brought a sense of calm amid the worry. The pair visited the Art Gallery of New South Wales after hours, where they were able to quietly explore the Matisse: Life & Spirit exhibition together.
Describing the experience, Nicole said it felt like a “soothing balm,” particularly meaningful given her mother’s lifelong influence on her love for the arts. “Coming from a mother who’s raised me in the arts, it was soothing balm,” she reflected. “Matisse was soothing balm last night.”
Even as her mother battles health issues, Nicole spoke with admiration about Janelle’s strength and clarity. Their bond, she explained, has only deepened — offering her a new perspective on life itself.
“I’m at the place where I’m being given the chance to view the world… my mum is giving me the chance to view the world through an 85-year-old woman’s eyes,” she said. “That is so beneficial right now because she’s so cognizant.”
Nicole went on to reassure listeners that, despite her health struggles, her mother remains mentally sharp and present. “She has every brain faculty available… she hasn’t lost anything. She hasn’t lost any memory, which is fascinating, and she’s extremely bright,” she added — a detail that brings both relief and quiet hope.
The close-knit duo were last seen together publicly at the Being the Ricardos premiere in Sydney in mid-December, a moment that now carries even more emotional weight in light of recent revelations.
Before returning to Australia, Nicole had previously spoken about how much she missed her mother while living in the United States. In an earlier interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, she shared a heartfelt wish that now feels especially poignant.
“I would love to be able to have a cup of tea with mum and sit on the balcony and talk about life,” she said at the time. “And have her tell me what I should be doing.”
Now, that wish has become a reality — albeit under far more emotional circumstances.
As fans around the world react to the news, many are sending their support to Nicole and her family, recognizing the universal pain of seeing a loved one face health struggles. Behind the red carpets and global fame, this is a reminder of something far more human: a daughter simply wanting more time with her mother.
