For decades, Al Roker has been one of the most recognizable and beloved faces on NBC’s Today show. But fresh claims from a former colleague are now casting a surprising spotlight on the veteran weatherman, with allegations that he was once on the verge of losing his job.
Former Today anchor Billy Bush has opened up about his brief and controversial time on the morning show, making a series of striking claims about what he says happened behind the scenes during his two-month stint in 2016.
Speaking on The Nerve with Maureen Callahan podcast, the 54-year-old media personality reflected on his experience working alongside Roker, 71, and alleged that tensions were far greater than viewers ever realized.
According to Bush, the longtime Today weather anchor could be difficult when things did not go his way and was highly protective of his role on the program. He described the atmosphere as challenging and claimed there were frequent moments of friction while they co-hosted the show’s third hour together.
Bush went even further by alleging that senior NBC executives had grown frustrated with the situation. He claimed he was told network leadership intended to make major changes to the show’s lineup and that Roker’s future at the network had allegedly been under discussion.
According to Bush, the plan was supposedly to wait until early 2017 before making any significant moves. However, he suggested those discussions never progressed because events surrounding his own departure from Today changed everything.
Bush was dismissed from the program in October 2016 following the release of the now-infamous 2005 Access Hollywood recording involving Donald Trump. The fallout effectively ended his time at NBC before any of the alleged changes he referenced could take place.
The former host also claimed that tensions extended beyond the studio. He alleged that Roker interacted positively with social media posts that criticized him during his short run on the program.
“I’m the new guy,” Bush recalled, saying he was shocked to see online activity that he believed reflected negatively on him at a difficult point in his career.
He also brought former Today star Matt Lauer into the conversation, alleging that both men were uncomfortable with his presence on the show.
“You could feel it,” Bush said during the interview, claiming the atmosphere behind the scenes was noticeably strained.
According to Bush, part of the reason the situation remained unchanged was because of Roker’s long-standing status within the Today franchise. By that point, Roker had already spent decades building his reputation as one of the network’s most recognizable personalities.
Roker officially became the weekday weather anchor in January 1996 and has remained a cornerstone of the morning program ever since.
Continuing his criticism, Bush alleged that many viewers were unaware of what he described as a very different side to the veteran broadcaster.
He claimed there was competitiveness, resentment and frustration behind the scenes, insisting that some of the behavior he witnessed was driven by professional jealousy.
Bush suggested his arrival as a younger television personality who connected quickly with staff members may have contributed to the tension.
“When I got there, a younger guy with a full head of hair, who the women on the staff genuinely liked a lot — that was infuriating to him,” Bush claimed during the podcast discussion.
He further alleged that when he was ultimately dismissed from the network, many colleagues were upset by his departure while others welcomed it.
Bush also revisited a previously released clip from his Hot Mics platform, which appeared to show an intense exchange between himself and Roker while reporting on location. In the footage, Roker could be heard raising his voice as crew members looked on.
At the time of publication, Roker had not publicly responded to the latest allegations. Requests for comment have reportedly been made regarding Bush’s remarks.
The controversy comes as speculation about Roker’s future at Today continues to circulate. Earlier this year, rumors surfaced suggesting the veteran broadcaster might be preparing to retire following his milestone 30th anniversary with the show.
Roker quickly dismissed the speculation and made it clear he has no plans to step away anytime soon.
“I love what I do. I feel good. I love this job. I love doing it,” he recently told People.
“At some point, I guess I won’t be, but I don’t feel like that’s anytime soon, so I’m just gonna keep going.”
Despite Bush’s explosive claims, many fans immediately rallied behind Roker online, describing him as one of television’s most respected personalities and questioning the timing of the allegations.
