Three years after a scandal rocked his television career, former This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield has spoken out about the “utterly brutal” period that followed his departure from ITV, admitting that the fallout completely reshaped his life.
The 64-year-old broadcaster stepped down in May 2023 following the public revelation of a long-running relationship with a younger colleague, which he described as “unwise, but not illegal.” The scandal left his professional reputation in tatters and severed his close friendship with Holly Willoughby, with whom he shared countless on-screen moments and luxurious family holidays.
In a candid email to the Daily Mail, Phillip revealed how he has embraced a quieter, “calm and drama-free” life away from the public eye. “I decided a while ago that I just wanted a quiet life with family, friends I can trust and my dog,” he explained.
Reflecting on the intense scrutiny he faced, Phillip added: “The past few years were, as you know, utterly brutal on so many levels and I came to terms with the fact that there was no way back.”
The fallout extended into his personal life as well. Married to Stephanie since 1993, Phillip publicly came out as gay in 2020. He admitted to The Sun at the time that he had previously denied rumours to his wife, who was “very, very angry” when she found out. The couple separated in February 2020 but remained married.
PR expert Mayah Riaz described Phillip’s ordeal as uniquely challenging, noting the “grey area between a genuine wrongdoing and a very public unravelling,” while highlighting the collateral damage for Holly Willoughby. “She was placed in an impossible position where any reaction was going to be criticised. Silence looked complicit, speaking out looked disloyal. That is a PR nightmare no one trains you for,” Riaz said.
Despite the turbulence, Phillip’s daughters, Molly, 32, and Ruby, 29, have remained steadfastly supportive. Speaking on Channel 5’s Phillip Schofield: Cast Away, Molly explained: “When my dad came out, it was very hard for me, it was very hard for the entire family – mainly my mum, of course – everything was turned upside down. But we talked through it, and over time it’s got easier. My mum, my sister – we’re all the same, we will always continue to support him no matter what.”
Now, Phillip has settled into a private routine, shielded from the spotlight. His life may have changed forever, but the presenter insists he is content with his new priorities, focusing on family, trusted friendships, and a peaceful home.
