Radio 4’s Jon Holmes has bravely shared his prostate cancer journey, including the powerful moment he told his children about the diagnosis that could have gone unnoticed without a life-changing decision. The Dead Ringers co-creator, 57, explained how he only got tested for the disease due to being adopted—a decision that likely saved his life.

Jon, who shares two daughters, Isla and Maisie, with his wife Nicki, revealed the emotional moment he had to tell his children the news. “I told them upfront: ‘You’re not going to die,'” he recalled, making sure his daughters knew that the prognosis was manageable. “They knew of cancer, but this was the first time I had to explain it to them personally,” he added.

His diagnosis came after encouragement from fellow advocate Stephen Fry, who battled prostate cancer in 2017. It led Jon to finally seek testing, despite being turned down initially because he had no symptoms. However, his adopted status led his GP to push for the test—a decision that revealed his cancer early, likely preventing it from becoming terminal. Jon underwent a radical prostatectomy, which removed his prostate and surrounding tissues, with the surgery ultimately saving his life. Still, he confronted his own mortality. “It does make you realize that you only get one shot at this,” he said, adding that thoughts of his children and legacy motivated him to make a will in case the worst happened.

Thanks to early detection and a successful operation, Jon is now cancer-free. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of testing and the urgent need for awareness about prostate cancer, especially for those without family history.

Jon is now advocating for greater understanding of prostate cancer treatment through a new campaign, Mind the Gap, with GenesisCare, aiming to fill the knowledge gaps around prostate cancer options and empower others to get tested.
