Sara Haines couldn’t hold back her emotions on The View when she learned about her extraordinary ancestry. On the February 5 episode, Finding Your Roots host Henry Louis Gates Jr. revealed that the TV star is related to two former U.S. presidents — John Adams (1797–1801) and his son John Quincy Adams (1825–1829).
During a private interview clip shown on the show, Gates Jr. held up a photo and asked Sara, “Do you know who that is?” Initially unaware, she soon realized it was John Adams, her third cousin, nine times removed. Sara’s jaw dropped, followed by giggles and tears of disbelief. “Oh my God. I’m related to a president! And he was a good one!” she exclaimed.
Gates Jr. explained that Haines’ lineage traces through her maternal grandfather, reaching back to Henry Adams, her 11th great-grandfather, who settled in Massachusetts in the 1600s. This discovery makes Sara the first guest on Finding Your Roots to be happily related to two presidents, a distinction previously unmatched on the show.
The ABC star’s ancestral connections don’t stop there. Gates Jr. also uncovered a German relative in the 1700s who faced prison time over a scandalous incident involving a pregnant woman, showcasing the fascinating twists in Sara’s family history.
Throughout the episode, Sara’s reactions ranged from tears to joyful laughter, as she absorbed the weight of her historic lineage — a discovery that left both the studio audience and her fellow co-hosts in awe.
Fans also learned that Sara’s curiosity about her family’s past mirrors the approach taken with other The View stars, including Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, and Sunny Hostin. Haines herself admitted she would be “beyond honored” to trace her roots further.
