Shock and Concern as Brendan Cole Questions BBC’s New Strictly Hosting Lineup

Fans of Strictly Come Dancing have been left buzzing after former professional dancer Brendan Cole voiced his doubts about the BBC’s bold new direction for the show. With Emma Willis, Johannes Radebe, and Josh Widdicombe stepping in to fill the iconic shoes of Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, Brendan insists there was a better choice for lead presenter — and it wasn’t who the BBC picked.

Speaking candidly, Brendan argued that Anton Du Beke, a long-standing Strictly judge and dance veteran, would have been the natural choice to steer the glittering show. “I probably would have gone with Anton Du Beke as the lead host,” he said. “He understands the DNA of Strictly better than almost anyone. He’s been part of the show for years, knows ballroom and Latin inside out, and truly gets the pressures the contestants face.”Anton Du BekeAnton Du Beke should’ve been the lead presenter, Brendan Cole reckons (Credit: BBC)

While he praised Emma Willis as “an excellent presenter” capable of bringing fresh energy, Brendan felt her talents might shine more in a supporting role — echoing Claudia Winkleman’s influence — while Anton could have led the main stage with authority and experience.

Brendan also expressed caution about the shift of Johannes Radebe from pro dancer to presenter, noting, “Johannes is incredibly flamboyant and showbiz-savvy, but if the goal is to focus on the emotion and the couples, I’m not so sure this move fits.” And on Josh Widdicombe, he added, “He’s a brilliant comedian with charm, but hosting a ballroom and Latin showcase demands someone with showbiz at their heart.”Johannes, Emma and Josh on StrictlyJohannes, Emma and Josh were recently named as the new Strictly hosts (Credit: BBC)

Reflecting on what made Strictly unique, Brendan lamented the drift from elegance to comedy. “Before, Strictly had class and quality at its centre. It appealed to families and older viewers who loved the escapism and sophistication. Now, it leans much more into silliness and chasing younger audiences.”

Despite his concerns, Brendan acknowledged the curiosity the new lineup might spark. “Audiences are fickle. They’ll tune in to see what’s changed, but sustaining interest depends on whether the show delivers something genuinely special with this new format.”

With Strictly Come Dancing entering this uncharted chapter, fans will be watching closely — and many may be wondering if Brendan Cole’s vision for Anton Du Beke as lead host might have been the key to keeping the magic alive.
