Carson Daly, co-host of TODAY, has undergone a new minimally invasive procedure designed to relieve decades of chronic back pain that has affected his daily life. The 48-year-old injured his back in a snowmobile accident while working for MTV in the 1990s, resulting in ongoing discomfort that worsened over the years.
Reflecting on the accident in Aspen, Colorado, Carson recalled: “I was knocked unconscious and woke up in a toboggan, unable to feel anything below my legs—a really scary moment.” He suffered a T12 compression fracture, though his spine remained structurally sound. “The pain source actually isn’t coming from those discs or the vertebrae. It’s coming from within the vertebrae,” he explained.

Initially, doctors recommended pain management only. After adverse reactions to prescription medications, Carson turned to physical therapy, yoga, massages, and cupping for relief. While he remained active in his 20s, the pain increasingly affected his life as a father to four children with TODAY Food contributor Siri Daly: son Jackson, 13, and daughters Etta, 9, London, 7, and Goldie, 2.
Carson shared: “(My back pain) affected my interaction with my family. I love to play with my kids, but sometimes I just can’t. I want to be better.”
Relief may now be in sight thanks to Intracept, an FDA-approved procedure targeting the basivertebral nerve. The treatment, which takes under an hour, interrupts pain signals from the spine to the brain. Carson’s physician reported positive results, even in older patients with longer histories of back pain.
Carson underwent the procedure earlier this week, taking time off from TODAY to recover. Upon returning, he told co-hosts: “I feel actually better, and I’m glad I did it. It’s not a cure-all, but it’s a step in my journey that I think is going to help.”
