Amy Dowden Reveals the Hidden Toll of Cancer Treatment: “I Had Broken Bones, Muscle Loss and an Early Menopause”

Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden has opened up about the devastating physical impact of her breast cancer treatment, revealing that chemotherapy and a medically induced menopause left her with broken bones, muscle loss and a long road back to fitness.

The 35-year-old professional dancer recently shared stunning bikini photos from a relaxing holiday in Ibiza, but behind the confident smile lies a remarkable story of resilience and recovery.

After one fan asked how she had managed to regain her strength and toned physique following cancer treatment, Amy offered an honest glimpse into the challenges she has faced.

“I worked with incredible physiotherapists on a programme built specifically for me,” she explained. “It kept changing as my body recovered.”Amy Dowden breaks silence on Thomas Skinner Strictly row 'I'm gutted' - The Mirror

Amy revealed that rebuilding her body wasn’t simply about returning to the gym—it was about repairing the damage caused by life-saving treatment.

“My programme was designed around my surgeries. I needed to rebuild my strength after broken bones following chemotherapy. I’ve also been put into menopause, so improving my bone strength became incredibly important, alongside getting my flexibility and stamina back as a dancer.”

She encouraged others recovering from illness not to compare themselves with anyone else, adding that the most important thing is finding an exercise programme tailored to individual needs.

A Difficult Road Back

Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023 and underwent a mastectomy before receiving the all-clear in February 2024. The treatment came at a heavy cost.

Just three days after completing chemotherapy in November 2023, Amy fractured her foot. Determined to return to the Strictly ballroom, she resumed dancing but later suffered a stress fracture, forcing her to withdraw from the 2024 series earlier than planned.

Looking back, Amy admits she underestimated how severely chemotherapy had weakened her bones.

“Every day after treatment I felt a little stronger, so I thought my body was ready. But I didn’t realise the full effect chemotherapy had on my bones.”

Her experience has since changed the way she approaches both training and recovery.

Finding Gratitude After Cancer

Amy has also reflected on how dramatically her outlook on life has changed since her diagnosis.

In an emotional social media post, she recalled that three years ago she had recently undergone breast surgery and fertility treatment while preparing to begin chemotherapy.

She admitted she was terrified of being pushed into an early menopause because her cancer was hormone-sensitive.

Today, however, Amy says she views life completely differently.

“I live every day to the fullest and appreciate the little things I once took for granted,” she wrote. “Every day is a gift, and I’m determined to make the most of it.”

Her message of hope and resilience has resonated with thousands of fans, many praising her honesty and positive attitude throughout her recovery.

Ready for a New Chapter

Despite everything she has endured, Amy is preparing to return to the 2026 series of Strictly Come Dancing, marking another major milestone in her inspiring comeback.

After overcoming cancer, fractures and months of rehabilitation, the professional dancer is once again looking ahead—stronger, wiser and determined to keep doing what she loves most.
