TODD AND SUMMER LEAVE WEATHERFIELD AFTER ONE HUGE, LIFE-CHANGING GESTURE!

Being accused of murder is enough to make anyone leave Coronation Street. Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) and Summer Spellman have every right to go jetting off to Thailand… even if it causes a serious headache for two beloved Coronation Street residents.

I think we can all agree that Todd and Summer have earned a break.

For the best part of a year, every day of Todd’s life was a waking nightmare behind closed doors thanks to his abusive partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright). The monster constantly subjected him to vicious physical attacks, as well as gaslighting, coercive control, financial abuse and sexual assault.

His best friend Summer also suffered as a direct result of Theo’s actions. Billy Mayhew, Todd’s ex-boyfriend and Summer’s adoptive father, died in the flaming wreckage of a minibus – all because Theo was too jealous and petty to bother saving his life. Summer gradually became suspicious and went to great lengths to prove Theo was responsible for Billy’s death, which resulted in her life being threatened by the raging narcissist.

Then came the night of Theo’s murder. Todd was supposed to be flying to Thailand to visit his mum Elieen (Sue Cleaver) and brother Jason (Ryan Thomas). However, Theo had other plans and soon found himself trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Todd wasn’t the only one. Theo discovered Summer in the flat that fateful night, and threatened her with that immortal line ‘I guess Summer had to end some time.’

However, it was Theo who met his hand as Summer escaped, and later that night, the vile bully had a violent confrontation that ended in him falling from the scaffolding to his death… which we now know that Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) was responsible for.

But obviously, as the victim of Theo’s constant torment, Todd was right at the top of the list of suspects. Theo’s ex-wife Danielle Silverton (Natalie Anderson) certainly thought so and publicly accused Todd of murdering him just to get his hands on the life insurance

While being in the spotlight was an ordeal for Todd, it literally almost killed Summer.

To be fair, the girl looked as guilty as sin. When her friends and fellow suspects George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) and Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) discovered her diary filled with troubling passages fantasing about holding a gun to Theo’s head, the evidence seemed pretty damning. So did the fact that Summer had the opportunity to study abroad in America… which looked a lot like fleeing from justice.

When Summer was eventually arrested, the one person who could back up her story and saw her fleeing Theo that night was Tyrone Dobbs’ (Alan Halsall), who stayed quiet for fear of anyone figuring out he was to blame for Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) getting crushed by a car in the garage. Facing jail time, Summer began to spiral and even switched off her insulin pump, which for a diabetic could be potentially fatal. But she just couldn’t face prison, even at the cost of her life.

Fortunately, Tyrone did the right thing eventually and got Summer off the hook. And now that it’s been revealed that Sarah is Theo’s killer, surely it’s only a matter of time before that comes to light, meaning that Todd and Summer are in the clear for good.

So what better time for Todd to finally take that delayed trip to Thailand with Summer in tow?

The only problem? Christine. She’s been acting weird around George recently and spending money like there’s no tomorrow. It seems like the closest thing on the Cobbles that Todd has to a mum and dad could use that cash a lot more than he could.

In upcoming scenes of Coronation Street, Todd and Summer will announce their big plans to jet off to Thailand, which could have a big knock on effect for George and Christina. Will Todd put it right?

At No.11, Todd confides in Summer that Christina is still spending money she hasn’t got and hiding the fact from George.  Summer warns Todd it could all end in disaster.

Later, Todd confides in James (Jason Callender) that he plans to give Theo’s life insurance away.

Meanwhile Christina tells a skint George that she is sure their luck is about to change as Todd will be giving George a share of the life insurance, but has she jumped the gun?

In the Rovers, Todd and Summer reveal that they’ve booked flights to Thailand for tomorrow and they’re going to visit Eileen and Jason.

How will Christina and George take this given their financial crisis?

And when Todd finds out, will he change his plans and give them the money as a big heartfelt gesture?
