Former Coronation Street favourite Channique Sterling-Brown has lifted the lid on a playful behind-the-scenes trick she used during her time on the ITV soap — admitting she deliberately tried to confuse viewers about one of Weatherfield’s biggest romances.
The actress, who played fan-favourite solicitor Dee-Dee Bailey, revealed that she used her character’s interactions with DS Lisa Swain to keep fans guessing before Lisa and Carla Connor’s relationship became one of the most celebrated love stories in recent Coronation Street history.

While Dee-Dee may have left Weatherfield behind, Channique’s revelation has given fans a fresh reason to look back at her time on the cobbles and the subtle moments that helped shape the show’s future storylines.
Dee-Dee Bailey’s Weatherfield Journey Comes To An End
Channique Sterling-Brown arrived on Coronation Street in 2022 as Dee-Dee Bailey, the daughter of Ed and Aggie Bailey.
Unlike the rest of the Bailey family, who had already established themselves in Weatherfield, Dee-Dee joined the Street later and quickly became a standout character. Her intelligence, confidence, and strong moral compass made her popular with viewers, while Channique’s performance earned her the Best Newcomer award at the British Soap Awards in 2023.
During her time on the soap, Dee-Dee was involved in several major storylines, including dramatic legal cases, family struggles, and complicated relationships. Her arrival brought a new energy to the Bailey family, and many fans quickly became invested in her future on the cobbles.
However, in 2025, Channique announced that she would be leaving Coronation Street. Her final scenes aired later that year, with Dee-Dee leaving Weatherfield behind for a new life overseas.
Reflecting on her exit at the time, Channique shared an emotional farewell message to fans, thanking viewers and the cast and crew who had supported her during her years on the show.
“Thank you for coming on this journey with Dee-Dee & I!” she wrote, adding that she was grateful for every moment spent working on the long-running ITV drama.
Although Dee-Dee’s story came to an end, Channique has now revealed that she had plenty of fun experimenting with her character while she was still part of the Coronation Street world.
Channique’s Secret Mission To Confuse Corrie Fans
Speaking on the Tis Yourself podcast, Channique opened up about one particular storyline choice that was designed to keep viewers guessing.
The actress admitted that she intentionally made Dee-Dee flirt with DS Lisa Swain, knowing that Lisa’s future romantic storyline would eventually involve Carla Connor.
“I had this massive thing where I would always flirt with DS [Lisa] Swain because obviously I knew she would be getting with Carla [Connor],” Channique explained.
Rather than simply following the obvious direction of the storyline, Channique wanted to create uncertainty among fans and leave them wondering whether Dee-Dee and Lisa could potentially become something more.
“I just wanted to throw the fans off,” she admitted.
The actress explained that she enjoyed playing with the possibilities of her character, especially because Coronation Street writers often respond to chemistry between characters and can take storylines in unexpected directions.
“You never know what the Corrie writers are gonna do, right, if they see something they like,” she said.
Channique even joked that she wondered whether the writers could potentially explore a completely different future for Dee-Dee.
“I was like, imagine they really like it and they made Dee-Dee gay,” she said, explaining that she was always looking for interesting angles that could add more depth to the character.
Lisa And Carla’s Historic Coronation Street Romance

While Dee-Dee’s flirting may have caused some speculation, the real romantic storyline fans were waiting for was the relationship between Lisa Swain and Carla Connor.
The pair’s romance developed into one of Coronation Street’s most talked-about modern love stories, with viewers celebrating their emotional connection and eventual commitment.
Their relationship faced plenty of obstacles before they finally reached the altar, including danger, family conflict, and dramatic setbacks.
However, in April, the couple delivered a historic moment for the soap when they officially became wives.
The wedding almost fell apart after problems at the Chariot Square Hotel threatened to ruin their plans. But Lisa refused to let the day end in disappointment.
Instead, she came up with a surprise plan.
After telling Carla to get dressed and suggesting they simply enjoy lunch at the hotel, Lisa secretly arranged for their wedding ceremony to continue.
When they arrived, Carla discovered that the wedding was still happening, with their closest loved ones gathered to support them.
Among those present were Lisa’s daughter Betsy Swain, Carla’s nephew Ryan Connor, and Roy Cropper, who has always been an important father figure in Carla’s life.
The emotional ceremony saw Lisa and Carla exchange vows and officially become wives, marking a major milestone in Coronation Street history.
The wedding was particularly significant because it made them the first two women to marry in the soap’s 65-year history.
A Celebration That United Weatherfield
Even after the emotional ceremony, the surprises were not over.
When Sally Metcalfe triggered the Underworld security alarm, Carla was forced to return to work despite just getting married.
However, the interruption turned into another unforgettable moment.
When Carla arrived at the factory, she discovered that her colleagues had secretly organised a wedding reception in celebration of her and Lisa.
The effort left both women overwhelmed, especially Lisa, who had not expected such a huge show of support from Carla’s Underworld family.
The scenes became one of the most memorable celebrations in recent Coronation Street history, highlighting the importance of chosen family and community.

Fans Look Back At Dee-Dee’s Role In The Story
Channique’s revelation has given viewers a new appreciation for the small moments that helped build the storyline.
Although Dee-Dee and Lisa never became a romantic pairing, the actress’ playful approach helped create speculation and added another layer of intrigue for fans watching at home.
For soap viewers, these moments of uncertainty are part of what makes Coronation Street so engaging. Characters can form unexpected connections, and seemingly small interactions can spark endless theories.
While Dee-Dee Bailey may now be away from Weatherfield, Channique Sterling-Brown’s latest comments prove she was always thinking creatively about how to make her character memorable.
And as Lisa and Carla continue their journey as one of Coronation Street’s most important couples, fans can look back knowing that even the rumours and red herrings played their part in making the romance even more exciting.
