Alison Hammond shared one of the most personal moments of her life during a passionate discussion about weight loss on This Morning, as a lively debate with Janet Street-Porter turned emotional and left viewers talking.
The conversation began as Alison, Janet Street-Porter, Nick Ferrari and Dermot O’Leary discussed whether calling someone “fat” should still be considered acceptable after a doctor suggested society needs to be more honest about obesity.
Janet immediately sparked controversy by admitting she believes the word has become almost impossible to say.
“I’m amazed I can even say the word ‘fat’,” she remarked. “I said it a couple of years ago on Loose Women and all hell broke out. It’s become a poisoned word.”
Alison calmly responded that it was “just a describing word,” while Dermot argued that everything depends on the context and the intention behind it.
But the discussion quickly became more heated when Janet claimed that people are rarely honest about their weight-loss journeys.

The former Big Brother host questioned Janet: ‘W hy do you think people are dishonest about losing weight?’ to which she replied: ‘I don’t know anyone who tells you the truth’

Alison, who has lost 11 stone in recent years, then shared the story of why she decided to lose weight, explaining she was inspired by her late mother (pictured right in 2018)
“I don’t know anyone who tells the truth about how they’re losing weight or why they’ve gained weight,” she said. “It’s one of the biggest issues we refuse to confront.”
Her comments prompted Alison to challenge the statement, asking how anyone could know whether another person’s story was truthful.
The exchange created one of the most intense moments of the programme before Alison shifted the conversation in a much more emotional direction.
The Promise to Her Mother That Changed Everything
Rather than focusing on public opinion, Alison revealed the deeply personal reason she decided to transform her health.
The television presenter explained that the turning point came while visiting her late mother in hospital.
Her mother, who had never commented on Alison’s weight before, looked at her and delivered a message she would never forget.
“Don’t end up like me. Try and sort out your weight.”
Those simple words changed Alison’s life forever.
At the time, Alison revealed she weighed around 30 stone, and hearing the advice from the person she loved most had an enormous impact.
“It came from my mum, who was my core,” she explained.
“That’s the day I changed.”
She added that difficult conversations can sometimes be life-changing when they come from a place of love rather than criticism.
“If someone genuinely loves you and wants the best for you, and wants you to start loving yourself, it means everything.”
Janet Raises Questions About Social Media
The discussion then turned toward social media, where Janet argued that many influencers present unrealistic images of health and fitness.
She suggested some people portray themselves as living healthy lifestyles despite exercising very little, while others heavily edit photographs before sharing them online.
According to Janet, these unrealistic portrayals make it increasingly difficult for people to know what is genuine.
Alison again questioned why the public should automatically assume people are being dishonest, highlighting the complexity of judging someone else’s personal health journey.
Alison’s 11-Stone Transformation
Alison has been refreshingly open in recent years about how she achieved her dramatic 11-stone weight loss.
Unlike many celebrities, she has consistently explained that her transformation came through long-term lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes.
She previously revealed that after learning she was pre-diabetic—and remembering her mother’s battle with type 2 diabetes—she decided it was time to completely rethink her habits.
The presenter cut back on sweets and high-fat foods, began training regularly with a personal trainer twice a week, and incorporated walking, stretching, strength training and yoga into her routine.
More recently, she has added Reformer Pilates and early-morning circuit classes to help maintain her progress.
Although Alison has praised weight-loss injections for people who genuinely need them, she has repeatedly said they were not the right choice for her personally, explaining that concerns about potential side effects made her cautious.
Instead, she has focused on creating healthier habits that she believes she can maintain for the long term.
A Conversation That Resonated Beyond Weight Loss
While the debate began with disagreement over language and public honesty, Alison’s heartfelt story reminded viewers that every weight-loss journey is deeply personal.
Her emotional recollection of the promise she made to her mother shifted the discussion away from controversy and toward compassion, highlighting that behind every transformation is often a story far more powerful than numbers on a scale.
Whether people agreed with Janet Street-Porter’s comments or Alison Hammond’s perspective, the conversation served as a reminder that discussions about weight remain among the most sensitive—and personal—topics in modern society.
