Absolutely Fabulous Icons Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley Finally Reunite After 9 Years Apart

Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders — the comedy queens who defined a generation — stepped out together at London’s BFI Southbank for a special screening of the Amandaland Christmas episode, instantly sending nostalgia levels soaring.

Nearly a decade after they last shared the screen, the iconic duo reunited amid flashing cameras and rapturous fan reaction — marking their first on-screen collaboration since the 2016 Absolutely Fabulous movie. And while this isn’t Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, the spark between them remains unmistakable.

New Roles, Same Electric Chemistry

In BBC sitcom Amandaland — the hit Motherland spin-off — Joanna stars as Felicity Sanderson, the razor-tongued, socially fearsome mother of Lucy Punch’s Amanda.

Jennifer joins the festive special as Joan, Felicity’s sister — described as her complete opposite: relentlessly upbeat, brimming with upper-class country-house enthusiasm, and impossible to ignore.

“I am delighted to be joining the fabulous Amandaland gang for a Christmas special,” Jennifer said.
“Playing Joanna’s on-screen sister is guaranteed to be a laugh — who doesn’t love a family reunion, SoHa-style?”

Despite inevitable comparisons, Joanna was keen to manage expectations.

“We’re playing characters as far from Edina and Patsy as can be imagined,” she said — before admitting the emotional pull of working together again was impossible to ignore.

“Everyone adored having her there — especially me. And it all felt empty when the Christmas episode was over and she had gone.”

Festive Cheer… And Festive Carnage

On screen, however, harmony is in short supply.

The official synopsis teases festive dysfunction as Amanda and her family descend on Aunt Joan’s grand country home — only for carefully laid Christmas plans to unravel spectacularly.

Amanda is desperate to recreate the magic of childhood Christmases. Anne is devastated at being separated from her family. Felicity grows increasingly irritated by her sister’s relentless cheerfulness. And Mal uncovers a mysterious photograph hinting at a long-buried family secret.

It’s chaos, secrets and passive-aggressive cheer — Amandaland style.

A Smash Hit That Keeps Growing

Since its February launch, Amandaland has gone from strength to strength, averaging 6.4 million viewers and becoming the BBC’s second-biggest comedy debut. A second series has already been confirmed.

The show follows Amanda, a newly divorced mother navigating modern parenting, friendships and romance — all while battling the ruthless politics of the school gate.

Created by the team behind Motherland — Holly Walsh, Sharon Horgan, Helen Serafinowicz, Barunka O’Shaughnessy and Laurence Rickard — the cast also includes Philippa Dunne, Samuel Anderson, Siobhán McSweeney, Rochenda Sandall and Ekow Quartey.

Glamour, Style — And Big Expectations

At the BFI screening, Lucy Punch turned heads in a cream satin blouse with a velvet bow tie, black Bermuda shorts and knee-high leather boots. Philippa Dunne opted for animal-print jeans and layered gold jewellery, while Samuel Anderson arrived in a herringbone coat, burgundy shirt and bowler hat.

Teasing what’s to come, Lucy promised festive fireworks.

“The Christmas special is going to be an absolute cracker — totes fire, with all the festive feels. Slay bells!”

The trailer hints at tinsel-soaked tension, including a painfully awkward gift exchange — and a half-spoken warning cut short by Amanda demanding: “What do I deserve to know?”

A Reunion That Hits Home

While Lumley and Saunders insist this is not an Absolutely Fabulous revival, the emotional pull is undeniable.

Seeing them together again — even as entirely new characters — feels like a rare, nostalgic gift for viewers who grew up watching their brilliance.

The Amandaland Christmas Special airs on Christmas Day at 9:15pm on BBC One and iPlayer — and for many fans, it may feel like a reunion they never thought they’d see again.
