Angie Best has shared an emotional update on her battle with colon cancer, revealing she is preparing to undergo major surgery as she continues fighting the disease.
The 73-year-old, best known as the former wife of football legend George Best and mother of TV personality Calum Best, told fans that doctors will remove part of her colon in an operation scheduled for this week.
Speaking candidly on Instagram, Angie admitted she feels anxious but determined.
“On Thursday I go in for an operation where they cut out the part of my colon that needs to be cut out. Nerve-wracking… but we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do.”
She also expressed hope that, once the operation is behind her, her hair will finally begin to grow back after months of chemotherapy.
“This Journey Has Been Mentally and Physically Exhausting”
Opening up about the emotional toll of cancer treatment, Angie said the experience has been every bit as difficult mentally as it has been physically.
“It’s very debilitating mentally as much as it is physically,” she told followers, adding that she’s trying to stay focused and find lessons even in the hardest moments.
Alongside her video, she wrote a heartfelt message of encouragement for others facing similar battles:
“Nearly the end of this miserable journey. Stay strong and focused, all who are on the same journey.”
Chemotherapy Has Taken a Visible Toll
Since revealing her diagnosis earlier this year, Angie has documented her treatment with remarkable honesty.
In recent months, she shared the heartbreaking reality of chemotherapy-induced hair loss, joking that she had only “15 hairs left” after visiting a salon for a fresh style.
Earlier, she posted an emotional video showing handfuls of hair falling out, saying she was learning to develop “a sense of humour” about losing her hair.
Positive Progress Brings New Hope
Despite the difficult months, Angie recently received encouraging news from her oncologist.
After four rounds of chemotherapy, doctors told her approximately 80% of the cancer had responded to treatment, describing her progress as remarkable.
Although she had hoped to hear she was completely cancer-free, Angie accepted that further treatment would still be necessary before surgery.
Combining Traditional Treatment With Mistletoe Therapy
Alongside chemotherapy, Angie has also travelled to Switzerland for mistletoe therapy, an alternative treatment used in several European countries to help support patients during cancer treatment.
The therapy uses extracts from the European mistletoe plant and is sometimes used to help reduce side effects such as fatigue, nausea and pain. While some practitioners believe it may improve quality of life, it is not an approved standard cancer treatment on the NHS, and major UK cancer organisations say there is currently insufficient evidence to confirm it as an effective cure. Angie has been using it alongside conventional medical care rather than as a replacement.
Calum Best’s Emotional Support
Angie’s diagnosis was first made public in January when her son, Calum Best, shared an emotional video revealing that the cancer had spread from her colon to her liver.
Fighting back tears, he described his mother as someone who had always prioritised health and fitness, adding that cancer “doesn’t discriminate.”
To help fund specialist treatment, Calum also launched a fundraising campaign, explaining that the cost of private care had become overwhelming.
Now, as Angie prepares for another major milestone in her recovery, fans continue to flood her social media with messages of encouragement, hoping the upcoming surgery will bring her one step closer to beating cancer.
