Chilling New ITV Documentary Puts Spotlight on Madeleine McCann Suspect Christian Brueckner as Release Nears

A chilling new ITV documentary is set to revisit one of the world’s most infamous unsolved mysteries — the disappearance of Madeleine McCann — by focusing on the man long suspected of being at the centre of the case, convicted rapist Christian Brueckner.

The programme, Madeleine McCann: The Search for a Suspect, will ultimately raise a disturbing question: “What does justice look like when the threshold for criminal charges isn’t met, but evidence against a suspect remains potentially damning?” Bungling local Madeleine McCann officers froze me out, says top UK detective | Daily Mail Online

Brueckner, who has consistently denied involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance, was first identified by German police as their sole suspect before being formally declared an “arguido” (formal suspect) by Portuguese authorities in 2022. Despite years of investigation, he has never been charged.

Currently, Brueckner is serving a sentence for an unrelated 2005 rape conviction. His release date is approaching — September 2025 — adding urgency to questions about whether justice for Madeleine will ever be achieved.

The documentary will feature Dr Graham Hill, a former senior detective, criminologist, and criminal profiler, who will speak in depth for the first time about his work on the case. Hill, who was sent to Portugal at the request of the Home Office in the days immediately after Madeleine vanished in May 2007, recalls advising police to widen their scope — advice he says was ignored.

In 2011, his review helped lead to the creation of Operation Grange, the Metropolitan Police’s dedicated unit still investigating the case today. I helped Madeleine McCann investigation - Christian B revelations could be tip of iceberg… he's the rarest of monsters | The Sun

The film will combine Hill’s detailed profiling of Brueckner with insights from forensic psychologists, journalists, and acquaintances of the suspect, painting a stark and unsettling picture of the man under suspicion.

Reflecting on nearly two decades of involvement, Dr Hill said:

“I’ve been involved in this case in one way or another for 18 years since Madeleine went missing, and the more I’ve learned, the more frustrated I’ve become. The longer it goes on without Christian B being charged, the more likely it looks like he’ll be released very soon.

His backstory, his criminal offending, the picture we’re getting from acquaintances and German police — I want to bring all that together and ask: Is Christian Brueckner the type of man who could have abducted and murdered Madeleine McCann? And does the information we now have suggest that he committed that crime?”

Mike Blair, Creative Director of Factual Programming at MultiStory Media, which produced the film, added:

“To have Dr Graham Hill speak in depth about his work on this case is a real privilege. He’s spent decades studying major crimes and working with law enforcement in both the UK and the US. His insights, right from the beginning of the McCann case, are invaluable.”

Madeleine McCann: The Search for a Suspect promises to re-examine the case with fresh eyes, asking whether a man once dismissed without charge could yet hold the key to a mystery that has haunted the world for 18 years.
