After more than five decades on Coronation Street, Barbara Knox has become one of the ITV soap’s most treasured stars. But even the actress behind Rita Tanner once found herself completely starstruck by another Corrie legend.
The heartwarming story was recently shared by former Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay, who revealed that Barbara once confessed she had experienced the very same nerves that overwhelmed Sally on her first day filming.
Sally Lindsay Froze During Her First Scene
Speaking on the Once Upon a Time podcast, Sally looked back on joining Coronation Street in 2001 as Shelley Unwin.
One of her very first scenes was with Barbara Knox, and she admitted the moment became far more emotional than she expected.
As she prepared to deliver a simple line to Rita Tanner, Sally suddenly froze.
Growing up in the North of England, she explained, Coronation Street had always been part of everyday family life, making the chance to work alongside one of its biggest stars almost surreal.
Unable to speak, Sally eventually apologized to Barbara, admitting she felt completely overwhelmed by both the set and the actress herself.
Barbara Knox Had the Perfect Response
Rather than making Sally feel embarrassed, Barbara immediately put her at ease with a touching confession of her own.
She smiled and told her:
“Don’t worry, darling. I did exactly the same to Doris Speed.”
The revelation surprised Sally, showing that even someone who would later become a Coronation Street institution had once been left speechless by another icon.
The Original Star Who Inspired Barbara
The actress Barbara admired was Doris Speed, who played the unforgettable Annie Walker—the formidable landlady of the Rovers Return.
Annie became one of the defining characters in Coronation Street history, running the famous pub with authority, elegance and unforgettable wit for decades before retiring in 1983.
For generations of viewers, she remains one of the greatest landladies the soap has ever seen.
A Reminder That Legends Can Still Have Heroes
Barbara Knox has portrayed Rita Tanner for more than 50 years, making her one of the longest-serving and most beloved cast members in British television history.
Yet Sally Lindsay’s story offers a charming reminder that even television legends can feel like fans when standing beside the people who inspired them.
It’s a rare behind-the-scenes moment that perfectly captures the unique family atmosphere of Coronation Street—where one generation of stars continues to inspire the next.
