Coronation Street viewers were left emotional after ITV honoured one of the soap’s most respected behind-the-scenes figures, Kay Patrick, with a touching on-screen tribute following Tuesday night’s episode.
The acclaimed director, who helped shape the long-running drama for more than two decades, died aged 85. Her passing marks the end of an extraordinary television career that touched some of British soap’s most unforgettable moments.
A Simple Tribute That Spoke Volumes
As the credits rolled on the June 30 episode, viewers were met with a photograph of Kay alongside the heartfelt message:
“In memory of Kay Patrick 1941–2026.”
The understated tribute immediately resonated with fans, many of whom praised ITV for recognising the woman whose work had quietly influenced generations of Coronation Street viewers.
Kay’s death was announced publicly on June 24, and her funeral took place earlier this week. Friends and family were encouraged to celebrate her life in the way she would have wanted, with mourners asked to leave formal black clothing at home and instead dress comfortably. No cause of death has been announced.
The Director Behind More Than 250 Episodes
Kay joined Coronation Street in 1994 and remained one of the programme’s most trusted directors for 21 years.
During that time, she directed more than 250 episodes, helping bring countless iconic storylines to life while earning enormous respect from cast and crew alike.
Looking back on her years at Weatherfield, Kay once reflected:
“I was lucky to be there at such extraordinary times.”
Those who worked alongside her often described her as calm, compassionate and instinctively aware of how to capture the emotional heart of every scene.
The Woman Behind One of Corrie’s Most Emotional Episodes
Among Kay’s many achievements, one episode continues to stand above the rest.
In 2014, she directed the heartbreaking farewell of beloved character Hayley Cropper, played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, as Hayley chose to end her life after being diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.
The emotional storyline, which left husband Roy Cropper devastated, became one of the most talked-about moments in the soap’s history and attracted more than 10 million viewers.
Julie Hesmondhalgh has often credited Kay for helping create the unforgettable final scenes.
Reflecting on filming the episode, she said:
“The almost holy atmosphere she created in the studio during those last scenes… She instinctively knew that it was a one-take moment, and so just blocked it and shot it with such understated love and sensitivity. It’s entirely down to Kay that those scenes were as raw and memorable as they were.”
The episode was widely praised for its sensitive handling of an incredibly difficult subject and remains one of Coronation Street‘s defining moments.
A Career That Reached Across British Television
Although Coronation Street became her professional home, Kay’s influence stretched far beyond Weatherfield.
Throughout her career, she directed episodes of some of Britain’s biggest television dramas, including EastEnders, Emmerdale, Brookside and Holby City.
Before moving behind the camera, she began her career as an actress during the 1960s, appearing in Doctor Who alongside the First Doctor, William Hartnell, as well as starring in Z-Cars.
Her passion eventually shifted toward directing, where she found the role that would define her legacy. She first developed her directing skills working on BBC Radio’s long-running drama Waggoners’ Walk before becoming one of British television’s most respected soap directors.

Following news of her death, former colleagues shared heartfelt messages celebrating not only Kay’s remarkable talent but also her kindness.
Former Coronation Street actress Lisa George, who played Beth Tinker, wrote:
“Awwww I loved Kay—worked with her quite a bit and just felt so safe in her hands. I thought she was amazing.”
Another tribute described her as:
“Such a kind, lovely lady and a cat lover to boot! Kay was so loved and respected by all who worked on Coronation Street. Rest in peace, Kay.”
