Damon Albarn, frontman of Blur, has revealed he took his teenage daughter, Missy, on a family holiday to North Korea to expose her to the complexities of different cultures and politics. Speaking on the Adam Buxton podcast, Albarn, 57, explained that he wanted to broaden his daughter’s perspective and help her become more politically aware.

In an exclusive conversation, Damon admitted that while he may have made life “too easy” for Missy, he’s always been firm about educating her on the world’s realities. “We go on family holidays to North Korea,” he shared, explaining that these trips aim to deepen her understanding of the world, particularly its more reclusive regimes.

Albarn, who first visited North Korea in 2013, was profoundly affected by the experience, which even inspired the song Pyongyang from Blur’s 2015 album The Magic Whip. He described the country as a “magical kingdom,” where “everyone is under a spell,” with constant reminders of the Kim family’s dominance. Despite the heavy restrictions placed on visitors, Albarn revealed his interactions with locals were incredibly warm, noting that the people he met were “really nice, genuine human beings.” Blur's Damon Albarn spotted with rarely seen daughter Missy after split from partner Suzi - The Mirror

The Gorillaz co-founder discussed the curious, almost surreal atmosphere in the country. “North Korea is full of normal people just existing under this mad spell. It’s a fascinating place,” he explained. He also dismissed some of the negative narratives about the country as “bulls***,” sharing his view that the perception of North Korea is often clouded by misconceptions.

While Albarn’s comments have raised eyebrows, he emphasized that the trip to North Korea has been a key part of his daughter’s political education. “Maybe she’s more politically aware than a lot of people in her generation,” he said, adding that Missy often expresses frustration over how indifferent many of her peers are to global issues.

Albarn also reflected on the challenges of being a public figure and a father, noting the tension between balancing fame and parenting. His split from long-time partner Suzi Winstanley in 2023 marked a significant personal change, but he remains focused on his family and his evolving career.

As one of the defining figures of the Britpop era and the creator of Gorillaz, Damon Albarn’s career is as eclectic as his personal life. His decision to introduce his daughter to North Korea adds yet another intriguing layer to his complex public image. Will his unconventional approach to parenting spark more conversations about global awareness among the younger generation?
