Actor Shane Richie, who appears on Michael McIntyre’s Big Show tonight (February 21), has previously spoken with raw honesty about one of the darkest chapters of his life — the death of his former fiancée, dancer Dawn Rodgers.
Now 61, the star best known for playing Alfie Moon on EastEnders was just 21 when he fell deeply in love with Dawn. The pair became engaged in 1986, and Shane even moved in with her parents in St Helier, Jersey, as their future together seemed set.
But behind the scenes, life was moving fast. Shane was an ambitious, up-and-coming comedian, often away for work — and emotions became complicated.
A Love That Ended — And a Call He Never Forgot
After more than a year engaged, the relationship came to a painful end when Shane realised he had developed feelings for Coleen Nolan, then part of the Nolan family and later a panellist on Loose Women.
In his 2003 memoir, Rags To Richie, Shane admitted he told Dawn the truth — that he couldn’t help who he had fallen in love with. The decision shattered them both. Dawn eventually moved on and began a new relationship.
Months later, the unimaginable happened.
Shane revealed he returned home from a gig to a message on his answering machine that stopped his world. Dawn had taken her own life.
“It was Mother’s Day,” he wrote. “She’d gone to her room and taken an overdose of pills and wine. I was devastated. I couldn’t even imagine how her family felt.”
‘I Felt Terrible That I’d Hurt Her’
At the time, Shane acknowledged his own mistakes. He later admitted to having an affair after meeting Coleen, something that deeply wounded Dawn. When Coleen’s brother Brian discovered what had happened, Shane recalled being confronted and forced to face the truth.
In his book, he explained that he confessed everything to Dawn, apologised repeatedly, and insisted he had never planned for any of it to happen. Despite her heartbreak, he said Dawn “put on a brave face.”
The following morning, Shane drove her to the airport. Before leaving, she returned her engagement ring. It was their final goodbye.
“I felt terrible that I’d hurt her,” he wrote.
Life Moved On — But the Pain Remained
Shane and Coleen married in 1990, going on to have a family together, before separating in 1999. Yet the tragedy of Dawn’s death has remained a haunting memory — one he has never spoken about lightly.
Years on, as Shane continues to appear on television and attend public events — including recent moments such as his appearance at Linda Nolan’s funeral — the story remains a sobering reminder of the hidden grief behind fame, laughter, and success.
