‘Did I Cause It?’: Sir Chris Hoy’s Wife Reveals the Heartbreaking Questions Their Children Asked After Learning of His Cancer

Sir Chris Hoy’s wife has spoken movingly about the moment their young children learned the truth about their father’s cancer — and the devastating, innocent questions that followed.

The Olympic cycling legend, now 49, was first diagnosed with cancer in September 2023 after visiting his GP with what he believed was routine pain in his shoulder and ribs. Determined to protect his family, Hoy kept the diagnosis private while undergoing treatment away from the public eye.

A year later, he revealed not only that he had cancer — but that it had spread to his bones and was terminal.

Now, in a deeply emotional interview with the BBC, Hoy and his wife, Lady Sarra Hoy, have shared how their children reacted when they were finally told.

The couple share two children — Callum, 11, and Chloe Rose, eight. According to Lady Sarra, fear quickly turned inward.

“They were scared,” she said. “They’d heard the word cancer before. And the questions came very quickly.

‘Is Daddy going to die?’
‘Will I catch it?’
‘Did I cause it?’
‘Is it because I was naughty?’

She explained that children often internalise trauma, believing something so serious must somehow be their fault. Determined to protect them from that burden, she and Chris chose complete honesty — making cancer and chemotherapy part of everyday family life rather than something whispered about in fear.

A Double Blow for the Family

As the family tried to process Hoy’s diagnosis, another devastating blow followed.

Less than a month later, Lady Sarra herself was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, after seeking medical advice for tingling in her tongue and face. MS is a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord, potentially worsening over time.

Chris later described the moment as a “double whammy” — yet the couple made a conscious decision not to let fear dominate their home.

Their journey is now explored in a new documentary, Sir Chris Hoy: Cancer, Courage and Me, which offers an intimate look at how the family has navigated unimaginable uncertainty together.

‘When the Dust Settles, It Hits You’

Reflecting on the early days after diagnosis, Hoy admitted the emotional impact came once survival mode eased.

“At first, you’re in fight-or-flight mode,” he said. “You adapt very quickly. But then there’s a moment when the dust settles and you think — how has this happened so suddenly?”

He continued: “I was straight into chemotherapy. And then Sarra’s diagnosis came so soon after. That was tough.”

Living Fully, Despite Everything

Despite everything, Hoy says the experience has transformed his outlook.

“It’s about not forgetting to enjoy the moment,” he said. “Making the most of every day.”

True to that philosophy, he has continued doing what he loves most — cycling — even after suffering what he described as the worst crash of his 43-year riding life, breaking his leg earlier this year.

“You don’t bounce like you do when you’re younger,” he admitted, still on crutches — but undeterred.

A Glimmer of Hope

Encouragingly, Hoy has shared that his cancer is currently stable following treatment.

“If you’re lucky, like I’ve been, you respond to treatment and enter a period of stability,” he said. “There are options. There’s science. And there are people all over the world working on better treatments every day.”

For now, Sir Chris Hoy is focused on family, gratitude, and presence — choosing hope over fear, and life over limitation.

As he put it simply:

“None of us are here forever. So you make the most of the time you’ve got. Live.”
