Fatboy Slim, the legendary DJ whose real name is Norman Cook, has revealed the life-changing moment his ex-wife Zoe Ball stepped in to save him from the grips of alcoholism.
Norman, 62, married Zoe in 1999, and despite their separation in 2016, the pair have remained close friends. He shared on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs that Zoe quietly warned him he had to get sober or risk losing her — a wake-up call he now credits with saving his life.
“That was my wake-up moment,” Norman said. “There had been tons of people shouting at me before, but it was whispered very quietly in the end.”
Struggles and Rehab
The superstar DJ admitted his last year of drinking was devastating. “It wasn’t enjoyable anymore,” he reflected. “Things were starting to fall apart in my life.” Norman checked into rehab in 2009, describing sobriety as the “hardest thing I’ve ever done,” and admitted he feared performing without a drink during his first shows post-rehab.
“For the first five shows, I was so paralysed and rigid with fear. I couldn’t dance, I couldn’t enjoy it. But then a beautiful night in Japan helped me realise my job was about making the crowd happy.”
Love, Family, and Forgiveness
Norman and Zoe’s story includes highs and lows. They welcomed son Woody in 2000, briefly split in 2003 after Zoe’s affair, reconciled, and then welcomed daughter Nelly in 2010. Despite divorcing in 2016, they have maintained a supportive friendship.
Zoe opened up earlier this year about the challenges of divorce, reflecting on the fear and overwhelm of making tough decisions while caring for children:
“It’s scary because it’s overwhelming on all fronts… but you come out the other side.”
Norman credits Zoe’s intervention and their continued friendship as central to his journey back to health, proving that sometimes, quiet words of love can change a life forever.
