Martin, who left his job at ITV in 2024 to care for Fiona full-time, explained in the caption, “Very touched by many nice comments from folk asking about Fiona whilst I’m on our short Tartan Noir Scottish tour so here’s a picture of what she’s up to in my absence – she’s changed Magnum flavours! The couple’s relationship has been marked by public outpourings of support, particularly since Fiona’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s at the age of 61. The disease, which causes a decline in memory, thinking, and behavior, has taken a toll on Fiona’s health and the couple’s day-to-day lives.

Martin shared that despite Fiona’s challenges, she still enjoys simple pleasures like the occasional treat, which brings a small bit of joy in what has otherwise been a difficult time. Fans of the couple were quick to express their support, with many commenting on the touching nature of the post.

One follower wrote, “Wonderful to see Fiona out and about. You are an amazing husband!” while others chimed in with messages like, “So lovely to see Fiona enjoying the sunshine” and “Aww, so nice to see you out and about, Fiona.”

However, in recent interviews, Martin has opened up about the emotional and physical toll Alzheimer’s has taken on their family. Appearing on Lorraine Kelly’s show, Martin spoke candidly about the “wretched” effects of the disease, describing how it has affected Fiona’s ability to remember important events, including holidays and birthdays. He also admitted that the constant emotional strain has sometimes led him to experience feelings of depression himself. Martin revealed, “She doesn’t remember Valentine’s Day, she doesn’t remember Christmas now, she doesn’t remember New Year’s. It’s wretched, not just for her but for the family as well. She’s still there, but day by day, we can see it slipping away.”

Despite these challenges, Martin praised Fiona for her resilience and determination, stating, “She’s very much with us, she’s still the world’s most stubborn woman, and she’s still around the house.” He also shared that they continue to find ways to connect, such as playing Fiona’s favorite music from Rod Stewart, with whom she had a personal connection during her career.

In the wake of Fiona’s diagnosis, Martin has been a vocal advocate for better care and funding for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. He has criticized the government for not doing enough to support research into the disease and called for more action to improve the lives of those affected. “The experts say you are not supposed to challenge someone with Alzheimer’s when they’re saying things that are completely wrong,” he explained. “But it’s very difficult when you are in that moment and you are just desperately hoping you might be able to get through to them.”

Martin has also opened up about the challenges of being a caregiver, admitting that his sense of guilt has sometimes overwhelmed him, especially when he is away from Fiona for work. He explained, “My respite is work, I’ve gone back to broadcasting, and podcasting… but I still feel guilty, I feel guilty being here [away from Fiona].”

The couple’s journey together has been marked by their deep bond and love for one another. Martin fondly recalled their earlier years together and the way Fiona’s vibrant personality once lit up any room. “I think what I’ve learned from all of this is that no matter what, you have to keep going,” he said. “You have to love and care, no matter how difficult it gets.”

Fiona’s battle with Alzheimer’s continues to be an emotional and challenging journey, but the couple’s strength and love for each other provide a shining example of resilience in the face of adversity.
