In a ground-breaking moment for The Great British Bake Off, history was made when TWO celebrities were crowned Star Bakers for the first time ever in the show’s 16-year history. On Sunday’s Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer, Mark Wright and Sugababes’ Mutya Buena both earned the prestigious title, much to the surprise of fans and judges alike.

Judges Paul Hollywood and Cherish Finden found themselves at odds as both Mark, former TOWIE star, and Mutya impressed with their skills during the three challenges. Host Noel Fielding couldn’t hide his shock as he announced, “Something weird has happened, this has never happened before in Celeb Bake Off history.”
Mark and Mutya were joined by a star-studded lineup including actor Ralf Little, comedian Emmett J Scanlan, and YouTuber Nella Rose. The celebrities were tasked with creating pull-apart savory rolls with yeasted bread dough within just two hours. Mark admitted, “I’ve never baked. Not even a cupcake in my life.” But his Spanish-inspired rolls, alongside Mutya’s cheese, garlic, and spinach rolls with a fiery chili twist, earned them both high praise.
For the technical challenge, the stars had to make vegan fruit tarts. But the real drama kicked off with the showstopper, where the celebrities had to craft cakes representing their most ridiculous purchase ever. Mark, who had splurged on a swimming pool for his dream home, created a Victoria sponge with homemade jam and buttercream filling. “It’s just there to look at,” Mark said of his expensive pool, admitting it was “too expensive to heat.” Despite a slight grittiness in the buttercream, the judges still praised his creation.
Mutya went all out for her showstopper, impressing with her vinyl-inspired orange zest and almond cake. Judge Cherish Finden described it as “airy, light, moist, its Va Va Voom.” Meanwhile, Ralf made a Rolex watch cake to retell the story of how his watch was stolen from his bedside table, and Nella created a red velvet bling ring cake.
However, Emmett’s attempt to make a Jaffa cake didn’t go as planned. The judges were unimpressed, with Paul Hollywood calling it “underbaked” and criticizing his marmalade.
Mark and Mutya’s perfect performances left the judges with no choice but to break tradition and crown two winners, marking a milestone in Bake Off history.
For Mark, the show held deep personal significance. He joined the competition after his family experienced the effects of cancer, with his grandfather, uncle, and great-uncle all battling prostate cancer. Mark also made headlines in 2021 after having a 12cm tumor removed, which was later found to be cancer-free after a sarcoma scare.
In the aftermath of the historic episode, Channel 4 also made headlines when they decided to scrap Scott Mills’ Bake Off episode due to the BBC star’s ongoing legal troubles. Scott Mills, who was sacked by the BBC amid a police investigation into sexual offenses, had been scheduled to appear, but his episode will no longer air.
With such a dramatic turn of events, it’s clear that Celebrity Bake Off continues to captivate viewers with unexpected twists, heartfelt moments, and jaw-dropping achievements.
