She captured the nation’s hearts as the only non-celebrity to ever win Celebrity Big Brother.
But behind the fairy-tale rise, Chantelle Houghton says not everyone in showbusiness welcomed her sudden success.
Now 42, the reality TV icon has spoken candidly about a deeply uncomfortable behind-the-scenes encounter with Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley, revealing how a single withering comment left her feeling “tiny” at the height of her fame.
From Unknown To National Favourite — Overnight
Chantelle shot to stardom in 2006 when she entered the Celebrity Big Brother house as a complete unknown, tasked with convincing famous housemates — including Jodie Marsh and Michael Barrymore — that she too was a celebrity.
Against all odds, she didn’t just survive the experiment. She won it.
Viewers across the country embraced her warmth and authenticity, turning her into a household name almost overnight.
She later proved her popularity wasn’t fleeting, returning for Ultimate Big Brother in 2010 and finishing an impressive third place.

“He Was So Rude — It Stayed With Me”

“Richard Madeley — he was so rude,” she said.
“I went on a TV show — I think it was Richard and Judy on Channel 5 — and he just made me feel really small.”
According to Chantelle, Madeley delivered a blunt warning that cut deeper than she expected.
“He said, ‘The nation might love you now, but it won’t last. Soon they’ll be tearing you to shreds and no one will be interested in you anymore.’”
The comment, she says, lingered long after the cameras stopped rolling.
“It just made me feel tiny,” she admitted.
Not The Only Star Who Dismissed Her
Chantelle says Madeley wasn’t the only celebrity to downplay her success.
She also recalled a similar encounter with Ruby Wax.
“She said, ‘You’ll only be around for 15 minutes, so see you later,’” Chantelle revealed.
At a time when she was navigating intense media attention and the pressure of overnight fame, those remarks proved difficult to shake.
The Celebrities Who Did The Opposite
But Chantelle is quick to stress that kindness did exist — and that some famous faces helped her through the chaos.
“Jamie Oliver has always been one of the nicest celebrities,” she said.
“He actually talked to me about sudden fame and how to cope with it.”
She added that the chef even invited her and his wife Jools out to dinner — a gesture she says meant a great deal.
“Dermot O’Leary is also wonderful,” Chantelle added. “Just a genuinely nice man.”
Life After Big Brother — And Public Scrutiny
Following her win, Chantelle remained firmly in the spotlight, appearing on shows including 8 Out of 10 Cats, The Weakest Link and Hotel Babylon — proving she was far from a one-hit wonder.
In recent years, she has also spoken openly about her dramatic five-stone weight loss, explaining that cutting out sugar and processed foods — not injections — was the key change.
She has also addressed cruel online trolls who accused her of being “fat,” “pregnant,” or “anorexic,” insisting her transformation came from discipline and lifestyle changes alone.
