In a deeply moving moment of grief and reflection, Mel Schilling’s husband, Gareth Brisbane, shared intimate details of their family’s private farewell to the beloved dating expert. After her tragic death at 54 following a courageous battle with cancer, Mel’s family came together for a ceremony that honoured her incredible legacy.
The Australian psychologist-turned-dating expert, renowned for her role on Married at First Sight, passed away last month, leaving behind her British husband of eight years and their ten-year-old daughter, Maddie. Gareth, emotionally speaking to followers on Instagram, praised his daughter’s strength, revealing how proud he was of Maddie, who delivered a beautiful speech at the funeral. The heartfelt tribute was live-streamed to Mel’s family back in Australia, as they were unable to attend in person.
Gareth reflected on the poignant moment, writing: “Maddie announced on the morning of the funeral that she had written a little speech, which she delivered beautifully. Every inch her mother’s daughter, and I couldn’t be prouder.” He added, “Mel would’ve been so proud.”
Following Mel’s final wishes, the family travelled to Gareth’s hometown of Whitehead, Northern Ireland, where they scattered her ashes at a lighthouse that had always resonated with her. “It’s a special place where strangers greet you as you pass by,” Gareth shared. “A place where we can now reflect on our incredible 15 years together.”
Despite their grief, Gareth and Maddie are already making plans for the future. In just a few weeks, the family will begin a new chapter in Bali, where they had previously found comfort and joy. “No better place to heal,” Gareth said. “A place we all loved.”
The family chose a stunning image of Mel for her funeral, which captured her essence perfectly—glamorous, warm, and vulnerable. “Love and light to you all,” Gareth wrote in his tribute, an echo of Mel’s radiant spirit.
Mel’s battle with cancer had been long and arduous. After being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023, Mel showed immense strength throughout her chemotherapy treatments. She fought relentlessly, even while barely able to lift her head from her pillow, never letting her illness stop her from working or showing kindness.
Gareth recalled, “This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, never complained. She never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion, and empathy.”

To the world, Mel was the queen of reality TV, the MAFS matriarch. To her family, she was a soulmate, a mother, and a role model. Gareth’s touching tribute captured the depth of their love: “Even in her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me. That gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly—her only thought was for us.”
As Gareth and Maddie prepare to start a new life, they take solace in the love and support that has poured in from around the world. In his emotional statement, Gareth expressed his gratitude: “Thank you for the support from around the world. It means more than we can ever say.”
