Olly Murs has spoken openly about the family rift that has shadowed his life for more than a decade — revealing that his twin brother Ben still refuses to speak to him, 16 years after a single decision fractured their bond and left their mother heartbroken.
In a rare and deeply personal interview, the singer, 41, admitted that becoming a parent has finally allowed him to understand the depth of his mum’s pain — and the lasting weight of a silence that never softened with time.
“Now that I’m a parent, I can relate more to my mum’s sadness,” Olly said quietly.
“My twin brother and I have been estranged since 2009. I’ve got nothing but love and respect for him — that’s never changed.”
One Decision. A Lifetime of Distance
The rupture dates back to 2009, when Olly made the career-defining choice to miss Ben’s wedding in order to compete in the X Factor semi-finals — a moment that propelled him to fame, but came at a profound personal cost.
The brothers have not spoken since.
“When you’ve been in the womb with someone, that bond is different,” Olly has previously said.
“When it breaks, the loneliness hits hard.”
He admitted the aftermath left him struggling to be alone at all.
“I couldn’t sit in a room by myself. I just wanted to be around people all the time.”
Success Didn’t Fill the Gap
Professionally, Olly’s career has continued to soar. Over the past year alone, he has released new music, toured extensively, and shared the stage with Robbie Williams, whom he describes as “like a big brother”.
But away from the spotlight, his priorities have shifted decisively toward family.
Olly and his wife Amelia welcomed their first child, daughter Madison, last year — and are now preparing for the arrival of their second baby.
Becoming a father, he says, changed everything.
“In a joint interview, Olly admitted parenthood made him understand how deeply the estrangement affected the whole family — especially his mum.”
A Guilt That Lingered
Just days after Madison was born, Olly had to leave home to support Take That on tour — a moment that filled him with guilt.
“Amelia had support around her, but it was still really hard,” he said.
“This time, it’s different. I’m not going anywhere.”
The contrast, he admits, has only sharpened his understanding of what his own parents lost.
‘Christmas Has Never Been the Same’
Despite the passing years, the silence between the twins remains unbroken.
Olly has tried to reach out — sending birthday messages, hoping for a reply — but nothing has ever come back.
“Every year I think about it,” he once said.
“Nine years. Ten years. I texted him for his birthday — but he’d changed his number.”
“Christmas has never been the same.”
The hardest part, he says now, is knowing how much the estrangement has hurt their mother — a pain he finally understands from the inside.
Love Without Answers
Whether reconciliation will ever come remains uncertain.
For now, Olly says, all he can hold onto is love — and hope.
Sixteen years on, there are no headlines left to chase, no decisions to justify.
Just the quiet truth of a bond that broke — and a family wound that time, success, and fame never managed to heal.
