“I’ve Learned to Live With It…” Emmerdale Star Jeff Hordley Opens Up on Silent Health Battle as Cain Dingle Faces Devastating Cancer Storyline

Emmerdale favourite Jeff Hordley, best known for playing Cain Dingle, has revealed the deeply personal health struggle he has been living with for decades — even as his on-screen character endures a heartbreaking prostate cancer storyline.

On the ITV soap, Cain’s world has been turned upside down after undergoing surgery to remove prostate cancer, only to later be told the disease may have spread. The character’s recovery has brought devastating side effects, including incontinence and emotional isolation, while his wife Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) struggles to process the possibility of further treatment and radiotherapy.

But behind the powerful performance, Hordley has been fighting his own long-term condition away from the cameras.

The 56-year-old actor was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in his mid-twenties after first experiencing symptoms years earlier. The chronic condition, which causes inflammation in the digestive system and currently has no cure, was initially misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome before further tests confirmed the reality of what he was facing.

Speaking in earlier interviews, Hordley described how persistent fatigue, weight loss and ongoing digestive issues forced him to push for deeper medical investigation after initial uncertainty from doctors.Jeff Hordley addresses Emmerdale axe fears 'I'm sure it will be me' | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV | Express.co.uk

“I was still sick and tired, and I kept losing weight,” he previously revealed, explaining how symptoms continued despite dietary adjustments.

Over the years, the soap star has become an ambassador for Crohn’s & Colitis UK, openly discussing the realities of living with a lifelong condition that affects daily life in unpredictable ways.

More recently, he shared a surprising shift in how he manages the illness. Speaking on a podcast appearance, Hordley revealed he has stepped away from medication, instead controlling symptoms through lifestyle changes, including diet, seasonal eating and exercise — though he acknowledged this approach is not suitable for everyone living with Crohn’s.

“I’ve managed to keep it under wraps because of diet,” he said, noting that managing the condition is an ongoing personal balance.

Interestingly, Hordley also admitted that Cain’s prostate cancer storyline prompted him to take real-life action, including undergoing a PSA test himself after becoming more aware of men’s health risks.

The actor, who first joined Emmerdale in 2000, said the storyline had encouraged both him and colleagues of a similar age to consider getting tested.

“It makes you think about the ‘what ifs’… and the importance of getting checked,” he explained.

Away from the intense drama of the Dales, Hordley’s personal life has remained grounded. He has been married to fellow Emmerdale star Zoe Henry — who plays Rhona Goskirk — since 2003, after meeting at drama school in the 1990s. The couple share two children, Violet and Stan, and have often spoken about balancing family life with the demands of long-running soap schedules.

From real-life illness to powerful on-screen storytelling, Jeff Hordley continues to bring emotional depth to one of Emmerdale’s most iconic characters — while quietly navigating his own long-standing health journey behind the scenes.
