A long-buried clip from the early 2000s has re-emerged — and it’s struck an unexpected emotional chord.
In a throwback interview that has begun circulating online again, Johnny Depp is seen praising Jade Goody at the height of her Big Brother fame — revealing he had been quietly rooting for her to win.
The moment, recorded back in 2002, was played to Jade during her exit interview from Big Brother series three, leaving her completely stunned.
‘I Want Her to Win’ — Depp’s Unexpected Admission
The clip shows a then-29-year-old Johnny being interviewed by broadcaster Edith Bowman, who asked him about the cultural phenomenon sweeping the UK.
Laughing, Depp admitted he couldn’t escape the show — before singling out one housemate in particular.
“You can’t avoid Big Brother,” he said. “Jade… I want her to win. Bless her heart — she should win. Jade should win. Good luck, Jade.”
At the time, Jade had been dominating headlines for her chaotic, unfiltered behaviour — a mix of ditsy comments and headline-grabbing antics that made her impossible to ignore.
Jade’s Priceless Reaction in the Studio
When the clip was played in the studio by Big Brother host Davina McCall, Jade’s reaction was pure disbelief.
As Edith joked that Jade “needed the winner’s money,” the reality star was seen screaming with delight, clutching her face and shouting:
“Oh my God!”
It was a rare moment of validation for a contestant who, at the time, was often mocked rather than celebrated — and it’s that contrast that’s making the clip resonate so strongly today.
‘Gone But Never Forgotten’
The footage was recently reshared by nostalgia account Peak Britannia, alongside a caption reflecting on how huge Big Brother once was — a time when ordinary people could become household names overnight, even catching the attention of Hollywood royalty.
Jade’s story, however, would take a heartbreaking turn.
She tragically died on Mother’s Day in March 2009, aged just 27, following a battle with cervical cancer. She was survived by her two sons, Bobby and Freddy, whom she shared with Jeff Brazier.
Her death prompted a nationwide outpouring of grief and led to a major increase in cervical cancer awareness and screening across the UK.
A Complicated Legacy
Jade’s rise was meteoric — and messy. Initially vilified after her first Big Brother appearance, she later won public affection through her openness, vulnerability and willingness to share every aspect of her life.
But in 2007, her return to the Big Brother house sparked one of the show’s darkest chapters, when Jade, alongside Danielle Lloyd and Jo O’Meara, was accused of racist behaviour towards Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty.
The controversy generated more than 44,000 Ofcom complaints — a record at the time — and left a permanent mark on her public image.
In a cruel twist of fate, Jade later learned she had cancer while appearing on the Indian version of Big Brother, live on air. The disease later spread, and she spent her final months documenting her illness with brutal honesty.
Why This Clip Hits So Hard Now
Seen through a modern lens, Johnny Depp’s words feel especially poignant.
At a time when Jade was often ridiculed, here was one of the world’s biggest movie stars quietly cheering her on — not for polish or perfection, but simply for being herself.
For many fans, the resurfaced clip isn’t just nostalgic. It’s a reminder of Jade before the scandals, before the illness — a young woman who briefly lived in a world where anything felt possible.
And more than 15 years after her death, moments like this prove why Jade Goody’s name still carries such emotional weight.
Gone — but never forgotten. 💔
