Elsie, who died peacefully on Tuesday surrounded by her family, enjoyed an illustrious five-decade career in the entertainment industry, becoming a household name as Noreen, the lovable but bumbling matriarch to Johnny’s adopted son, Geoff Maltby, in Benidorm. Her character, known for her clueless charm, was a fan favorite for over ten years, cementing her place as one of the show’s most memorable figures. Johnny Vegas, who played Geoff, posted a touching tribute to Elsie, remembering her not just as an on-screen mother but as a mentor and guiding light in his personal life. “Elsie was a mother figure to me, on and off-screen,” he shared. “She guided me through many highs and lows while we worked together overseas. When I say Elsie was loved by all, it’s not just a comment—it’s the truth. She touched and guided so many careers, and I’ll always treasure the time we spent together.”

He added, “Elsie made going to work feel like play. It was more than work—it was time with family, and that’s something I’ll always hold dear. Thank you, my other Mum, for the endless joy you brought to so many lives.” Elsie Kelly with on-screen son Johnny Vegas, who played Geoff. Elsie’s career spanned far beyond Benidorm. She was first known for her role as the gossipy cleaner, Eileen Tardebigge, in the long-running soap Crossroads, a role she played until the show’s cancellation in 1988. Elsie’s later work included guest spots in shows such as The Famous Five, The Ghost Hunter, Skins, and a memorable dual role in Benidorm, where she portrayed Noreen’s twin sister, Doreen, in the show’s final season.

Her contributions to the arts were not limited to acting; Elsie was also a stalwart in theatre production. For almost 50 years, she ran the Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust, overseeing countless musical productions and providing mentorship to aspiring performers. In 2024, she was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the Liverpool Culture & Creativity Awards, which was presented to her by none other than Johnny Vegas himself. Elsie appeared in the show for a decade, and was hailed by its creator as 'one of the most beloved cast members'

Co-stars from Benidorm have also shared their tributes. Derren Litten, the show’s creator, praised Elsie for her warmth and incredible talent, noting that she had brought “so much joy to everyone she worked with.” He added, “Elsie was a true comedic genius, and her natural warmth made her one of the most beloved cast members. She will be greatly missed.”

Elsie’s legacy extends far beyond her work on screen. Her co-stars, including Crissy Rock, who played Janey York, described her as “an absolute joy to work with,” remembering their time on Benidorm with fondness. “She brought so much warmth and laughter wherever she went,” said Crissy. “I’ll always treasure the wonderful memories we made.” She would later play a role opposite herself in Benidorm - appearing as Noreen's twin sister Doreen in the final series

Despite her passing, Elsie’s impact on those who knew her remains. Her contribution to television, theatre, and the lives of those around her will never be forgotten.

Her family confirmed the news, with her son Chris writing a heartfelt message on social media. “So sad to report that my lovely Mum, Elsie, has passed away after a short illness, peacefully surrounded by family,” he wrote. Prior to Benidorm, she was also a leading member of the cast in children's TV series Harry and the Wrinklies (top right)

Elsie’s agent also released a statement, sharing how the actress had left an indelible mark on British television. “Her unmistakable charm, sharp timing, and gentle humour made her a fan favourite. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”

Elsie Kelly’s memory will live on not only through her iconic roles but also in the hearts of the many people she inspired throughout her illustrious career.
