Julian Lloyd Webber, the renowned cellist and brother of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, has revealed he is battling prostate cancer. The 75-year-old musician made the announcement just days after a triumphant return to the concert stage following a 12-year hiatus due to an injury.
In an emotional statement, Julian shared that he had kept his diagnosis secret, not wanting to disappoint his fans, especially after performing a charity gala concert on his birthday at the prestigious Wigmore Hall. “I did not want to let anyone down, so I kept my diagnosis secret until after my birthday concert,” Julian confessed. “But now I need to begin treatment as soon as possible. I am encouraged by the expectations of the medical team and look forward to making a full recovery.” 
Despite the diagnosis, Julian, who has been a prominent figure in the classical music world, is determined to continue with his engagements. “I am not intending to cancel engagements and I won’t comment any further on this matter until after the treatment,” he added.
Julian’s return to the stage marks a remarkable comeback after a severe herniated disc injury left him unable to perform for many years. The injury was so debilitating that he even sold his prized Stradivarius cello, fearing he would never play again. However, Julian defied the odds and began practicing again, starting with just short practice sessions before building up to full performances. 
In addition to his musical achievements, Julian has always shared a special bond with his brother Andrew. Reflecting on their childhood, Julian recently revealed in his book Bows and Arrows how the brothers created an entire “make-believe world” centered around a toy theatre. While Andrew found fame in musical theatre, Julian became one of the most respected cellists in the classical world.
The Lloyd Webber brothers have worked closely together over the years, with Andrew composing pieces specifically for Julian to perform. Their strong musical foundation was shaped by their father, William Lloyd Webber, and their shared love for music has led to numerous collaborations, particularly in recordings of Andrew’s compositions.
Andrew, who has faced his own health challenges, including a cancer battle in 2009, has been a supportive figure in Julian’s life. In 2023, Andrew suffered the devastating loss of his eldest son, Nicholas, who passed away after a battle with gastric cancer.
As Julian begins his treatment, his family, fans, and medical team are hopeful for his full recovery.
