Kate Garraway appears to be embracing a hopeful new chapter in her life, with her relationship with fellow journalist Liam Halligan continuing to grow stronger.
The Good Morning Britain presenter, 59, was all smiles as she attended a close friend’s birthday celebration alongside Liam, 57, marking one of the clearest public signs yet that their relationship is becoming more serious. The pair, who have reportedly been dating for around three months, have known each other professionally for years, making their romance one built on a long-standing friendship.
A Sweet Public Appearance Together
Kate and Liam attended the birthday celebration of their friend James, where they happily posed alongside friends for a photograph later shared on social media.
The TV presenter looked effortlessly elegant in a white silk blouse paired with a matching blazer, while Liam coordinated in a crisp white shirt. Standing close together and smiling warmly, the couple appeared relaxed and comfortable in each other’s company.
Kate later reshared the image herself, writing simply:
“We love you James!”
While the post focused on celebrating their friend, fans quickly noticed that it also served as another public glimpse into Kate’s blossoming relationship.
A Romance Built on Years of Friendship
Although their relationship is still relatively new, Kate and Liam have known each other for many years through their careers in journalism.
Liam, a respected economist and political commentator, was also a friend of Kate’s late husband, Derek Draper, making the pair’s connection one that developed naturally over time.
Speaking openly about their relationship in his column for The Spectator, Liam admitted he never expected to become the subject of celebrity headlines.
“As a sandwich-board man of the business pages, I’m flabbergasted to be in the showbiz sections.”
He joked that while few people paid attention to his economic warnings, reporters now seem far more interested in one question:
“How’s it going with Kate?”
Liam also shared that despite working in different areas of the media industry, they quickly discovered how much they had in common.
“Kate Garraway and I are from different parts of the media but have much in common—not least a shared sense of humour. Though it’s early days, there’s a definite spark between us.”
Supporting Each Other From the Beginning
Their growing bond became increasingly visible earlier this year when Kate supported Liam during the Duchenne Dash, the annual charity cycling event from London to Paris.
The pair were photographed laughing together and sharing affectionate moments throughout the event, with Liam joking afterward:
“But can she ride a tandem?”
The appearance sparked speculation that the two had become more than friends, speculation that has only intensified in recent months.
Kate Opens Up About Their Relationship
Despite keeping much of her private life out of the spotlight, Kate recently acknowledged that she is enjoying this new chapter.
Speaking with the Mirror, she described the relationship as simply:
“It is lovely. I suppose it is!”
She also admitted that their busy schedules have made finding time together surprisingly difficult.
“We basically haven’t really had time for a proper date!”
Laughing, she added:
“I don’t want to jinx it! I don’t want to say anything because I will jinx it! We all love an Irishman, don’t we?”
Her comments reflected both excitement and caution as the couple continue to get to know one another away from the public eye.
Finding Happiness After Heartbreak
Kate has remained single since the devastating loss of her husband, Derek Draper, who passed away in 2024 following a prolonged four-year battle with complications linked to Covid-19.
Throughout those difficult years, viewers watched Kate balance her television career with caring for Derek while raising their two children.
Liam has also spoken about the circumstances that brought them closer together.
Appearing on Mark Dolan’s TalkTV programme, he explained:
“It’s early days, we’ll see what happens.”
Reflecting on their friendship, he added:
“In recent years, for different reasons, we have both become single, against our wishes. So, in recent weeks and months, Kate and I have become good friends.”
