Busted’s Matt Willis has shared an emotional health update on his bandmate James Bourne, who is preparing for “major surgery” to extend his life. During his appearance on Good Morning Britain, Matt spoke about the challenges James is facing after having to step away from the band’s tour last year due to his health.
James, 42, shocked fans when he revealed he was undergoing surgery to improve his condition after stepping down from the Busted vs McFly tour just one day before it began in September. Describing James as “really sick,” Matt explained how the illness came on quickly, and the band had to make the difficult decision to go on without him.
James, who has since shared updates with fans, confirmed in a post last week that he is preparing for surgery. “I have a plan in place to have major surgery that should extend my life and hopefully make me well enough to come back to what I love the most, which is touring and making music,” he said. “It really sucks to be out of the game. But there is hope!”
During his chat with Gyles Brandreth, Matt reflected on the emotional moments after James’ absence. “We had to put something out there about him not being well,” Matt said, adding that despite the tough situation, James is now “on the mend.”
Fans have expressed their support for James and the band after his emotional post about his health struggles, which was shared on his Instagram. Matt and his bandmates have always been open about their close bond, and this moment has been especially hard for them.
“I’ll be seeing him today!” Matt revealed on Good Morning Britain. “We love him, and we miss him.”
The Busted vs McFly tour, which ran through September, October, and November of 2025, was designed as a friendly competition between the two beloved bands, and fans were eagerly anticipating the clash of the pop-punk titans.
