Nancy Guthrie Update: Ex-FBI Agent Flags a Chilling Detail in Porch Video — And Why Investigators Say More Than One Person May Be Involved

A former FBI agent has drawn fresh attention to a previously overlooked detail in surveillance footage showing a masked individual on the porch of Nancy Guthrie on the night she vanished — a detail that could suggest the involvement of accomplices.

Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI agent, said in a post on X that the masked person appears to be carrying a handheld walkie-talkie, pointing to what she believes is coordinated activity rather than a lone individual.

“Porch Guy definitely had an accomplice and maybe more than one,” Coffindaffer wrote. “No way you commit this abduction by yourself. See the antenna? See the handheld walkie-talkie? They were coordinated.”

Her comments come as authorities continue to analyze footage and physical evidence connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, who has been missing for more than three weeks.

Nancy was last seen at her home outside Tucson, Arizona, on January 31 and was reported missing the following day. Investigators have said they believe she was kidnapped, noting that drops of her blood were found on the front porch.

Conflicting Images, Lingering Questions

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it is aware of differences in images released of the masked individual — including appearances with and without a backpack. Those discrepancies fueled speculation that the person may have been at the home on more than one occasion.

However, the department stressed there are “no date or time stamps associated with these images” and said “any suggestion the photographs were taken on different days is purely speculative.”

Coffindaffer urged caution in assuming the images show a single suspect. “Don’t be too sure that the guy with no gun and no backpack wasn’t an accomplice,” she wrote, adding that suspects often dress alike in coordinated crimes.

What Authorities Know So Far

Surveillance video from Guthrie’s doorbell camera shows a masked individual wearing a ski mask, long pants, jacket, gloves and a handgun holster. The FBI described the person as a man approximately 5ft 9in to 5ft 10in tall with an average build.

While investigators are seeking information related to the individual seen on video, the sheriff’s department said they are “not ruling out the possibility that more than one person may be involved.”

Last week, authorities revealed that DNA recovered from gloves found several miles from Guthrie’s home did not match any profiles in CODIS, the FBI’s national DNA database. The gloves appear consistent with those worn by the masked individual seen in the footage.

Investigators also collected DNA from Guthrie’s property that does not belong to her or to anyone in close contact with her. Officials said they are now turning to investigative genetic genealogy in an effort to identify a suspect.

Sheriff Chris Nanos previously acknowledged there are “challenges” with the DNA evidence, explaining that some samples are mixed or partial.

“All evidence collected from the crime scene and related search locations has been submitted for forensic analysis,” the sheriff’s department said Wednesday. “The laboratory is processing the evidence. There are no additional updates at this time.”

Health Concerns and Ongoing Search

From the earliest days of the investigation, authorities have expressed concern for Guthrie’s health, noting she requires daily medication. Despite requests from officials to give investigators space, volunteers have continued searching the area.

On Sunday, volunteers located a backpack, but authorities later said it was not the same brand as one seen in the surveillance footage and was not considered a viable lead.

Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie announced that her family is offering a $1 million reward for information leading to her mother’s recovery.

“We still believe in a miracle,” Savannah said in a video posted to Instagram. “We still believe that she can come home.”

She also acknowledged the painful uncertainty facing the family, saying they recognize that her mother may already be gone — but stressed they need answers and closure.

Expert Perspectives

Former FBI supervisory special agent and profiler Jim Clemente previously told Newsweek that the masked individual appears to show some criminal sophistication, but not the traits of a professional abductor.

“He is not police or military trained and likely has not done this before,” Clemente said.

Authorities continue to emphasize that speculation without evidence does not help the investigation, reiterating that conclusions will be guided by verified facts.

For now, one overlooked detail — a possible walkie-talkie — has renewed focus on the possibility that Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance may involve more than one person, as investigators work against the clock to uncover the truth.
