Radford shared that she made the decision to return to Atlanta ahead of the birth so she could be close to her family and receive care from a medical team experienced in addressing critical issues affecting Black maternal health in the United States.

The name Marcelena carries deep family significance, as Radford revealed it was discovered while researching her family history during work on her debut novel Now Then.

She explained that the name traces back to her Jamaican and Cuban heritage, and was found in historical family documents, making it an immediate and meaningful choice for her daughter.

The middle name Adelola also honours her husband’s Nigerian roots, with its Yoruba meaning translating to “the crown brings honor and wealth,” reflecting both families’ cultural backgrounds.

Radford, who is also mother to 3-year-old daughter Lana, said her eldest child is thrilled to welcome her baby sister, describing their first meeting as an emotional and joyful family moment.

She shared that Lana has already formed a strong bond with her newborn sister, proudly introducing her to hospital staff and expressing excitement throughout the visit.

The journalist said the experience has become a “core memory” for her family, calling it one of the most meaningful and joyful moments of her life.
