Currently touring with his hit show Better Late Than Never…Again!, Kay has become a symbol of transformation, with fans noticing his significant weight loss. But the comic’s path to this new chapter has been far from easy.

Speaking at a BBC “In Conversation With…” event at Salford’s Lowry Theatre, Kay recounted his years of trying everything to shed pounds. When asked by presenter Sara Cox about his previous attempts at weight loss, he quipped, “Only for the first 48 years of my life.” Kay revealed that, over time, he began to seriously think about his health, pushing him to make lifestyle changes. “I had to eventually,” said the 52-year-old comedian. “You start thinking about your health and things like that, don’t you?”

From fitness videos to gym memberships, Kay tried it all. He recalled following his mum’s fitness videos, particularly a Rosemary Connolly workout, in his early days, even struggling to catch his breath. “I put it on once, and I were in the back room, trying to get my breath. I was wet through and sweaty,” he shared, adding humorously, “And she said ‘now that we’ve warmed up,’ and I thought, warmed up?” Peter Kay addresses dramatic weight loss for first time amid health battle

Kay’s journey continued with various gym experiences, from joining a high-energy aerobics class to a grueling old-school gym in Manchester. “Honestly, it were awful. I used to tell him I needed a wee and I’d go and sit in the toilet and sob because it were like proper old school.”

The moment that really made Kay realize his weight struggles came after a night watching The Green Mile with his wife. He had been doing well on his diet when, midway through the film, he snuck out to grab a hotdog. “I shoved it in because I had only said I was going for a wee,” he admitted, laughing at his own weakness.

It was in that moment, after seeing his reflection in a Babe movie poster, that Kay truly understood the extent of his habits. “Look at you, you should be ashamed of yourself,” he thought. But in true comedic fashion, before the food could even hit the trash, he took one last bite.

Returning to his wife, she immediately noticed the hotdog, as she could smell it on his breath. “She could tell I’d had a hotdog,” he recalled with a chuckle.

Despite his comedic approach to these moments, Kay’s weight loss journey has been an ongoing battle. He’s learned to laugh at himself, but the journey has also been about focusing on his health and well-being.

In a heartfelt conclusion, Kay shared that the profits from his 2026 tour would go to multiple cancer charities, highlighting his commitment to giving back. “It’s been a tough road, but I’m getting there,” Kay said.

The full conversation, which aired on BBC Radio 2 on December 1st, is available to listen to on the BBC’s website.
