Phillip Schofield Breaks His Silence Three Years After ITV Exit: “There Was No Way Back”

Three years after the scandal that ended one of Britain’s most successful television careers, Phillip Schofield has spoken publicly for the first time about the painful aftermath—admitting he eventually accepted that there was “no way back.”

The former This Morning presenter, now 64, described the years following his departure from ITV as “utterly brutal,” revealing that he has chosen a much quieter life away from the spotlight.

Schofield stepped down from ITV in May 2023 after admitting to what he called an “unwise, but not illegal” relationship with a much younger male colleague. The revelation sparked intense public scrutiny, ended his decades-long television career, and brought his close friendship with former co-host Holly Willoughby to an end.

Now living privately in Cornwall, Schofield says he has found peace by distancing himself from fame.

“I decided a while ago that I just wanted a quiet life with family, friends I can trust and my dog,” he reportedly said, adding that he is now content with a “calm and drama-free” existence.

Reflecting on everything that followed the controversy, Schofield admitted the experience changed his outlook completely.

“The past few years were, as you know, utterly brutal on so many levels, and I came to terms with the fact that there was no way back.”Phillip Schofield comes out as gay - 'I have been coming to terms with it' | Ents & Arts News | Sky News

The presenter first met the colleague involved when the young man was a 15-year-old drama student, although Schofield has consistently maintained that their relationship did not begin until years later when he was an adult.

The scandal also had a devastating impact on Schofield’s personal life. He married Stephanie Lowe in 1993 and publicly came out as gay during an emotional appearance on This Morning in 2020. Shortly afterward, the couple separated, although they have remained legally married.

Recalling the difficult conversation in which he told Stephanie the truth about the relationship, Schofield previously revealed she was “very, very angry” after he confessed.

Public relations expert Mayah Riaz believes Schofield’s story continues to divide public opinion because it sits in what she described as “a grey area” between personal mistakes and public accountability.

She also argued that Holly Willoughby became “collateral damage” during the controversy, explaining that any response she made was destined to attract criticism.

Despite the turmoil, Schofield has continued to receive unwavering support from his daughters, Molly and Ruby.

In Channel 5’s documentary Phillip Schofield: Cast Away, his eldest daughter Molly reflected on how the family navigated the difficult period following his decision to come out.

“When my dad came out, it was very hard for the entire family—especially my mum,” she said. “But we talked through it, and over time it’s got easier.”

She added that despite everything that has happened, the family has remained united.

“My mum, my sister and I will always continue to support him no matter what.”

While a return to mainstream television now appears unlikely, Schofield says he has accepted the end of that chapter, choosing instead to focus on a quieter life surrounded by the people who have stood beside him throughout his most challenging years.
