Richard Madeley, the beloved Good Morning Britain host, has candidly admitted that the failure of his first marriage was something he deeply regrets. The star, who tied the knot with his first wife, Lynda Hooley, in 1977, has revealed that he blames himself for the split, which occurred in 1983.
In a heart-to-heart conversation on Matt Willis’ On The Mend podcast, Richard expressed his feelings of guilt, acknowledging that his youth and immaturity played a major role in the marriage’s downfall. At just 21 years old, he was far too young to understand the commitment that marriage entailed. “It was very unfair on my first wife,” he said, reflecting on the pain caused by his lack of maturity at the time. “I thought I was ready, but I wasn’t. We both got our fingers burnt.”
Richard’s self-reflection doesn’t stop there—he openly admitted that he was simply “too optimistic” and that his youthful naivety led him to make a decision he wasn’t equipped to handle.
Fast forward to 1986, when Richard married his This Morning co-host Judy Finnigan. The pair, who share two children—grown-up son Jack and daughter Chloe—have been a beloved TV couple ever since. Richard credits their mutual experience of past relationships for helping them weather the ups and downs of their own marriage.
Richard also reflected on the unique bond he shares with Judy, saying that their close partnership has been strengthened by years of working together. “We are incredibly close, and working together for so long has bonded us more tightly than if we had separate careers,” he shared on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast.
Through his openness, Richard has proven that even those who seem to have it all can carry regret—and that personal growth often comes from the hardest lessons.
