In June 2019, it seemed like a fairy tale moment when Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas popped the question to The Only Way is Essex’s Lucy Mecklenburgh in Positano, Italy, just two years after they began dating. The couple, who fell in love while filming Channel 4’s Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls, were expected to tie the knot soon after their engagement. However, almost seven years later, the wedding still hasn’t taken place, and insiders are now revealing the real reason why their big day has been put on hold. 
While initially the couple claimed that life simply got in the way—first the pandemic and then the arrival of their two children, Roman (born March 2020) and Lilah (born May 2022)—sources close to the couple suggest that there may be deeper reasons behind their decision to remain “perma-engaged” rather than tying the knot.
“We’re just happy as we are,” one insider shares, explaining that Lucy is more focused on her independence and her flourishing career, especially after seeing Ryan’s past financial struggles.
Ryan, who was declared bankrupt in 2013 due to an unpaid £40,000 tax bill, has been working hard to recover from his financial setbacks. Despite his efforts to rebuild, his company, R James Thomas Ltd, was recently reported to have just £1 in its account. In contrast, Lucy comes from a wealthy family, with a financially savvy father who’s taught her how to handle money carefully.
Lucy, who has a successful wellness business RWL—the UK’s leading at-home fitness app—has reportedly been advised to protect her assets, especially her business. “She worked hard to get RWL to where it is now,” the insider adds. With Ryan’s past financial difficulties, Lucy could be hesitant to merge their finances through marriage, as it may expose her business to future risks if things go wrong again.
However, another source close to the couple denies that finances are the reason behind the delay. According to them, “It’s not about money. Ryan and Lucy are simply happy being parents to their two young kids and don’t feel pressured to rush into a wedding.” They’ve both agreed that a huge wedding isn’t necessary to show their commitment to each other. 
Despite this, the couple’s wedding would be an extravagant affair, considering their large families and celebrity circle. “A wedding of that scale would take time and a lot of money,” another source reveals, adding that while Lucy’s family is wealthy, Ryan doesn’t want to rely on handouts. Both are committed to paying for the wedding themselves, but it will take years to save for the celebration of their dreams.
The truth is, the couple is in no rush. They are focused on raising their children and enjoying their family life. “A big fancy wedding would be nice, but it’s just not a priority for them right now,” the source explains. The marriage, when it does happen, will undoubtedly be a day to remember.
But with Ryan’s ongoing financial recovery, the question remains: will they ever walk down the aisle, or will they continue to be “perma-engaged” indefinitely?
