Actress Samantha Womack, best known for her role as Ronnie Mitchell in EastEnders, made a candid appearance on Sunday Brunch (March 1), where she reflected on the deeply personal journey she faced following her breast cancer diagnosis.
The 53-year-old actress first shared her diagnosis in 2022, paying tribute to the late Olivia Newton-John while revealing that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Though Samantha later confirmed that she was cancer-free by December 2022, she has been open about how the diagnosis forced her to confront her mortality from the very start.
Speaking about her experience, Samantha explained how cancer pushed her into an emotional space she had never expected to enter. “You never want to lose your life,” she said. “But cancer forces you to look into that cupboard. I started preparing for that from the beginning, because you realise you could be close to having that final moment.”
Samantha went on to describe how she emotionally prepared herself for the possibility of having only months to live. “I started preparing for the ‘what’s going to happen if I’ve only got six months.’ But once you’ve looked in that cupboard, it’s not as scary as you think. I felt like, ‘OK, that cupboard is there, and I don’t know when it’s going to be fully open.’”
After six months of treatment, Samantha admitted that surviving cancer came with financial challenges. She shared that she now has “far less money” than before, but emphasized that the experience reshaped her perspective and priorities.
“I’ve definitely changed as a human,” she explained. “If I feel like I need a break, or a check-up, or if I’m uncomfortable with a job or a group of people, I trust my inner voice so much more than I ever did. If something doesn’t feel right — health-wise or otherwise — I’m far more confident now to say, ‘Do you know what? I don’t think this is for me.’ My perception has shifted.”
Samantha also reflected on the financial insecurity that had shaped much of her early life, recalling how money worries were a constant source of anxiety. She revealed that growing up without stability had made her crave financial security, believing it was essential for her physical well-being.
However, surviving cancer has changed her view on this fear. “I still worry about money, but it doesn’t take over my entire body anymore — because I know I’m safe,” she said. While she still worries about finances, Samantha now finds herself turning down more work than ever before.
Despite being cancer-free for over three years, Samantha recently experienced another emotional blow when her aunt, Angie Best, was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer. This reminder that the shadow of illness never fully disappears serves as a testament to the strength, resilience, and perspective that Samantha has gained throughout her journey.
Her story is a powerful reflection of survival, shifting priorities, and the quiet strength found in facing life’s greatest challenges.
