Sarah Greene, the beloved host of The Finish Line on BBC One, has opened up about the devastating loss of her mother, Marjie Lawrence, to ovarian cancer. In a deeply emotional reflection, Sarah shared how her mum’s passing came just three weeks after her diagnosis, a tragedy that has left a lasting impact on Sarah and her family.
Born into a TV-famous family, Sarah’s mother, Marjie, was a respected actress known for her role in the soap Round the Redways, and her father, Harry Greene, was a pioneering DIY expert. However, in 2010, Sarah’s world was shattered when her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer—a condition that many people are still unaware of.
In a letter to The Stroud Times, Sarah shared her frustration with the lack of awareness surrounding ovarian cancer symptoms, writing: “If my mum had known the signs, she might still be with us today.”
Sarah’s powerful words highlighted how crucial early detection is, noting that “nine in 10 women survive if caught early, but sadly two-thirds are diagnosed late, when treatment options are limited.” In her advocacy for better awareness, Sarah continues to urge women to listen to their bodies and seek help if they experience symptoms like bloating, stomach pain, or needing to urinate more frequently.
Sarah’s message is a plea for change, as she believes more must be done to educate both the public and healthcare professionals. “Women are being failed,” she said, stressing that more progress must be made to ensure no one else loses a loved one to this silent killer.
Through her own loss, Sarah Greene is now at the forefront of raising awareness for ovarian cancer, hoping that others don’t face the same heartache her family endured. The more we know, the earlier we can act—and for Sarah, that’s the legacy she wants to create in memory of her mum.
