Giovanna Fletcher, 38, was visibly emotional as she opened up about her son’s heartbreaking struggle with EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance) during an episode of her Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast. The mother of three, married to McFly’s Tom Fletcher, revealed the pain of seeing her child go through a deeply challenging school issue.

Giovanna shared how she and Tom spent months trying to get their son into school, only for him to confide, “I want to, but I can’t.” The poignant words left Giovanna struggling to hold back tears as she described the emotional toll of trying to understand her son’s distress.

During the podcast, Giovanna and child therapist Saskia Joss discussed the often misunderstood condition of EBSA, which causes children to experience extreme emotional and physical distress at the thought of attending school. “It’s not just about refusing to go,” Saskia explained, “It’s about children who wish they could go but feel trapped by their fears.”
Giovanna revealed how difficult it has been to get her son through the school doors. “It’s one of the hardest parts, getting them in and keeping them there,” she said. “It feels like something they have no control over.”
The discussion also shed light on the immense emotional strain on both children and parents living with EBSA, with Giovanna explaining how she and Tom are learning to navigate this challenging journey together.
“Children with EBSA feel weighed down and suppressed by the pressure of just going to school, which is something they’re meant to do every day,” said Saskia. The emotional journey has been both heart-wrenching and eye-opening for the family as they continue to support their son through his struggles.
Fans took to the comments to share their own stories, with one writing, “My son ended up on a feeding tube from EBSA. He’s now thriving in a specialist school, and I never thought I’d see the day.”
Others shared their experiences of feeling the same way in the past and highlighted how important it is for people to recognize EBSA for the debilitating condition that it is.
Giovanna’s courage to speak out about her son’s condition has opened up a much-needed conversation about school-related anxiety and the struggles that many children face in silence.
