Scott Mills has broken his silence following his shock dismissal from the BBC after new information came to light regarding a sexual offence investigation involving him. The 53-year-old radio presenter, who was cleared in 2017 after a police investigation into allegations of serious sexual offences dating back to 1997-2000, has expressed his gratitude for the support he’s received from colleagues and listeners throughout his 27-year career with the corporation.
Mills confirmed the investigation that took place years ago, stating in his emotional statement, “I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have reached out to me with kindness, my former colleagues, and my beloved listeners, who I greatly miss.” He explained that the recent announcement about his departure from the BBC led to rumours and speculations, prompting him to address the situation directly.
The investigation, which Mills fully cooperated with, involved a historic sexual offence allegation reported in 2016. Mills confirmed that a file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which concluded that there was not enough evidence to proceed with charges. The police closed the case in 2019, and Mills hopes that both the public and media will respect his wish for privacy regarding the matter.
The BBC, which was aware of the police investigation in 2017, acted swiftly following the emergence of new information related to the same alleged victim. While the BBC declined to specify the reasons for his dismissal, it acknowledged that fresh claims prompted their decision. The BBC spokesperson emphasized the corporation’s commitment to improving its culture and standards, stating that the recent actions were in line with their values.
Meanwhile, friends of Mills have expressed concern for him, noting that he has been avoiding calls and “going to ground” since the BBC’s announcement. The timing of Mills’ firing has also raised questions, with some sources suggesting it may have been linked to recent high-profile media stories, including the Channel 5 documentary on disgraced ex-BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.
One media expert suggested the BBC must clarify what they knew about Mills’ case, as the situation is causing confusion and backlash among listeners. Meanwhile, former BBC News anchor Edwards, who was portrayed in the Channel 5 documentary, has expressed support for Mills through social media.
Amid all the speculation and drama, Mills continues to remain tight-lipped about further developments, leaving many questions unanswered.
