As Silent Witness wraps up its 29th season this week, I can’t help but feel something hasn’t quite clicked this time around. Despite being hooked by the show for years, this season has left me wondering—has the magic worn off?
The move from the Lyell Centre to the Bowman Centre in Birmingham should have been a refreshing change, but it wasn’t the new location that had me questioning the show. In fact, I loved the new backdrop—it was exciting to see the stories set in Birmingham, especially with the intense car chase scenes in the opening episodes.
The first few episodes—particularly The Disappearance of Alice Hill—had me absolutely hooked. The twists, the suspense, the shocking reveal of Alice’s killer—all of it was top-notch. I couldn’t wait to see how it unfolded, and the tension was as strong as ever.
But from there, things started to slip. The Creekwood episodes, which featured a grisly murder with a screwdriver impaled in a victim’s eye, left me confused. Too many characters, too many twists—it felt a bit overwhelming. And then there was the AI storyline in The Enemy Within, which seemed to fizzle out, only to be briefly revisited in the final moments.
What happened to the gripping dynamic between Nikki and Jack? In previous seasons, their relationship was a driving force, keeping us glued to the screen. But this season, that connection seemed lost. There was less focus on them as a couple, and I missed that emotional pull.
That said, I can’t deny the power of the recent episodes. The tension surrounding Jack’s near-death experience had me on edge, especially with that shocking prison twist. It was terrifying to watch, but fortunately, Jack survived.
But even with those nail-biting moments, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the final episodes were lacking something. The ending didn’t hit the dramatic high note I expected. I honestly thought the season would leave us on a cliffhanger, not knowing if Nikki would make it out alive. Instead, it felt… flat.
Even though this season wasn’t my favorite, Silent Witness remains one of the BBC’s best dramas. After 29 seasons, it’s clear the show still knows how to capture our attention. In fact, there are rumors that filming has already begun for season 30, and I’m excited to see where it goes next.
I’m ready to give the show another chance. See you in January 2027!
