STORM BREWING AT BREAKFAST Sally Nugent’s ‘Glow-Up’ Sparks Fresh Tension as Brutal Dig Is Aimed From Under-Fire Co-Star While Bullying Probe Drags On

A glamorous new look on BBC Breakfast has reportedly ignited fresh tension behind the scenes — with insiders claiming a sharp remark from an embattled colleague has added yet more strain to a show already engulfed in controversy.

Viewers may have been admiring Sally Nugent’s recent on-screen glow-up, but sources now allege that her transformation did not go down well with Naga Munchetty, as the programme continues to face a long-running bullying investigation.

ImageNaga was first placed “under review” in August after claims emerged that several colleagues had raised concerns about her allegedly “hard” and “bullying” behaviour. By November, those concerns were said to have escalated into a formal investigation — one that remains unresolved.

Now, according to The Sun, tensions flared again after Sally debuted her refreshed look on the sofa.

It is claimed Naga made a pointed comment, reportedly snapping:

“We’re meant to be serious journalists, not trying to look like we’re presenting This Morning.”

While some viewers praised Sally’s new style, insiders say the remark landed badly — particularly given the already fragile atmosphere on the show.

Sally had previously shared photos of her flowing new hairstyle on Instagram, tagging celebrity colourist Calum Tierney, whose client list includes Michelle Keegan and Samia Longchambon. But sources insist the change was never about rivalry — and that Sally has actively tried to stay out of any internal politics.

An insider said:
“Things had been ticking along fairly quietly for the past couple of months while the bullying investigation continued — but this was a nasty little moment.

“Sally makes every effort to avoid rivalries, which is why the comment felt particularly targeted. What’s wrong with having a few highlights and experimenting with new styles?

“She’s loving the new look — and it doesn’t detract from her journalism in the slightest.”

A BBC spokesperson told the Daily Mail: “We do not comment on individual staff issues.” Representatives for both presenters were contacted for comment.

Sally currently hosts BBC Breakfast alongside Jon Kay from Monday to Wednesday, while Naga presents the programme with Charlie Stayt from Thursday to Saturday. Sally joined the show in 2021 following Louise Minchin’s departure, while Naga has been a fixture since 2014.

ImageAway from the studio, Sally’s personal life has also seen change. She split from husband Gavin Hawthorn in May 2023 after 13 years of marriage. The former couple share one son.

Meanwhile, Naga’s future at BBC Breakfast remains uncertain. Reports claim she has been allowed to remain on air during the investigation, but with strict limitations — allegedly working only with certain producers and having interactions monitored.

A source previously told The Sun:
“She hasn’t been taken off air, but there are specific people she’s allowed to speak to. It’s far from ideal, and everyone hopes it comes to a head soon.”

Further uncertainty has been fuelled by reports that the departure of BBC News CEO Deborah Turness could leave Naga “vulnerable”, with insiders suggesting the timing has not gone unnoticed by her critics.

The BBC has repeatedly declined to comment on the allegations, stating: “We do not comment on individual HR matters.”

Naga’s conduct has also been scrutinised following reports that BBC Breakfast editor Richard Frediani took an extended leave amid a broader internal review into bullying and misconduct on the programme. She was also reportedly spoken to by executives after a junior staff member accused her of bullying, and following claims she made a crude sexual jibe during an ad break on her radio show — allegations she has not publicly addressed.

ImageWith tensions simmering, viewer attention may be focused on the screen — but insiders suggest the real drama at BBC Breakfast is unfolding behind the cameras.

And as the investigation drags on, even a hairstyle change appears capable of reigniting a storm.
