Phillip Schofield begins his mornings walking his chocolate cockapoo, Alfie, through a leafy corner of west London. Neighbours are still star-struck when the former TV presenter stops to chat, but these casual moments of friendly banter have been years in the making.

Three years ago, in May 2023, Schofield sensationally stepped down as host of ITV’s This Morning after a dramatic fallout with his co-presenter and longtime friend Holly Willoughby. The dispute stemmed from Holly questioning Phil’s honesty regarding a relationship with a much younger colleague, which he initially claimed was just friendship. When ITV sided with Holly, Phil decided to leave. Two weeks later, he admitted in a mea culpa email that he had had an affair with a runner more than 30 years his junior, acknowledging that he had lied to colleagues, employers, and most importantly, his family.

“I did have a consensual on-off relationship with a younger male colleague,” Phil admitted. “I am painfully conscious that I have lied to my employers, colleagues, friends, agents, the media, and most importantly my family. I am so very, very sorry, as I am for having been unfaithful to my wife.”

Describing the affair as “unwise but not illegal,” Phil’s departure marked the end of a 21-year tenure on one of Britain’s most popular daytime shows. His talent agency dropped him after 35 years, and many friends distanced themselves. The divorce from his wife Stephanie, whom he had separated from after coming out in 2020, was formalised.

Now 64, Schofield has broken his silence, admitting he has accepted a future outside television. “Life is really calm and drama-free now,” he said. “I decided a while ago that I just wanted a quiet life with family, friends I can trust, and my dog… I’ve got used to my new life, and I’m content and happy.” Friends note that Phil finally feels he can be himself, often spending time near Waterloo with a loyal circle of pals.

The former golden couple of daytime TV, Phil and Holly were once inseparable, even purchasing neighbouring holiday villas. However, sources say the relationship became toxic over time, with both families taking sides. Holly’s husband, Dan Baldwin, reportedly despises Phil, while Phil’s daughters think little of Holly today. “Three years is a long time in showbiz: once it was BBQs and bike rides, today there is no contact,” one associate said.

Despite stepping back from the limelight, Holly has begun planning a comeback, developing her own daytime project under her husband’s production company, while enjoying a quieter family life after surviving a terrifying plot to kidnap, assault, and murder her in 2024. Phil, meanwhile, has opted for a low-profile life, attending only small outings and socialising with trusted friends, eschewing the glitz of awards and parties.

Insiders say the former colleagues are now settled into separate, quieter lives. “Who would have thought that three years on, both Holly and Phil would be happy with how things have turned out?” one former associate said. Yet friends note Phil still misses his old influence at This Morning, where he once wielded considerable power. “Phil got what Phil wanted. If he didn’t want someone involved, they’d be binned,” a staff member remarked. “He loved the power.”
