Huw Edwards, the disgraced former BBC presenter, has dramatically broken his silence to the Daily Mail ahead of the premiere of Channel 5’s two-part drama Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards. The series, starring Martin Clunes, explores the tragic and controversial events surrounding Edwards’ fall from grace, following his conviction in 2024 for possessing indecent images of children.

In an exclusive statement, Edwards, 64, expressed fury over the drama, accusing the production company, Wonderhood, of creating a narrative without consulting him beforehand. “They made no attempt to check the truth of any aspect of their story before proceeding with the production,” he said. “They only asked for my response after the drama was already made, and they reserved the right to edit it as they wished.”

Edwards, who made headlines when he pleaded guilty to charges involving indecent images, has not been shy about his regret, offering an apology to the Daily Mail for his crimes. “My deep regret and remorse for the crimes I committed were expressed in court,” he wrote. “I take full responsibility for my reprehensible actions. I am repelled by the idea that some people enjoy viewing indecent images of children. Every image represents an innocent victim. I offer my sincere and profound apologies.”

The former newsreader, who for decades was the face of BBC News at Ten, has also vowed to share his side of the story. “I am working on producing my account of these terrible events,” Edwards revealed. “It’s a slow process given the fragile state of my health. I’ve struggled with mental illness for 25 years, and while that doesn’t excuse my actions, it helps explain why things spiraled the way they did.”

Edwards also claimed the mental health issues he’s faced in recent years contributed to his actions, though he acknowledged that mental illness should never be used as an excuse for criminal behavior. His decision to openly discuss his past is being met with mixed reactions, with some describing his response as self-pitying and “deluded.”

As the drama unfolds, Channel 5 has defended their approach. A spokesperson explained that the series was made based on extensive interviews with the victim, his family, and journalists involved in breaking the story. “All allegations made in the film were put to Huw Edwards via his solicitors six weeks before transmission,” the spokesperson said. The channel emphasized that the drama was produced in compliance with the Ofcom Broadcasting Code.

In his statement, Edwards expressed concerns about the fairness of the drama’s portrayal, questioning how it could be “responsible” or “fair.” “I find it difficult to see how this approach complies with broadcast standards,” he added.

The drama comes after Edwards’ personal life was rocked by the charges against him. His 30-year marriage to Vicky Flind ended after the charges were brought, and insiders say it has been devastating for his family. Edwards now lives in quiet seclusion in Wales, far from the public eye.

While Edwards may be planning a comeback, it’s unclear what shape that will take, with one source saying, “He has got himself an agent, and we are likely to see him return to the spotlight soon.”
