Coronation Street actress Debbie Rush has shared the devastating news that her beloved son, William, has died aged just 31 — a loss that comes heartbreakingly close to Christmas.
The actress, best known for her role as Anna Windass, confirmed William’s passing in an emotional Instagram post, revealing that he died on Wednesday, 17 December. His cause of death has not been made public.
“Our beautiful baby boy, William, passed away on 17th December,” Debbie wrote.
“As a family, our hearts are completely broken, and there are no words that can truly capture the depth of our loss.”
In her tribute, Debbie spoke not only of grief, but of extraordinary generosity — revealing that William became an organ donor, offering hope to others even in his final moments.
“Even in our darkest moment, William gave the most precious gift of all,” she said.
“Through being an organ donor, he has given hope and life to other families, thinking of others right to the very end. His kindness and love will forever be part of his legacy.”
She added a heartfelt request for privacy as the family begins to navigate what she described as “unimaginable grief.”
A Life Lived in the Spotlight — and with Kindness
William followed closely in his mother’s footsteps, building a career on screen from a young age. He was best known for his role as Josh Stevenson in Waterloo Road, appearing in the BBC drama from 2009 to 2013.
He also starred in Grange Hill, Shameless, and Vera, and made two appearances in Coronation Street in 2014 — sharing the iconic cobbles with his mum.
In 2016, William showed another side of his talent when he auditioned for The X Factor, performing Zara Larsson’s Lush Life in front of Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger. He progressed to the Six Chair Challenge, earning praise for his confidence and presence.
An Outpouring of Love
Following Debbie’s announcement, messages of love and support flooded in from across the TV world.
Fellow Coronation Street actress Sally Dynevor wrote:
“Oh Debbie, I’m so shocked to hear this news. Sending you so much love. What a beautiful boy he was.”
Waterloo Road star Katie McGlynn added:
“Debbie, I am so sorry to you all. Will brought a smile to everyone’s face and was a very kind soul.”
A Family Left Behind
William leaves behind his parents, Debbie and Andrew, and his siblings, Poppy and Tom. His sister Poppy is also an actress, known for her role as Sophie Dodd in EastEnders — continuing a family legacy of performance and creativity.
Debbie ended her tribute with words that now echo far beyond her family:
“William will always be loved, always missed, and forever in our hearts.”
A life taken far too soon.
A family grieving immeasurably.
And a legacy of kindness that will live on through others.
