President Donald Trump’s White House made waves on social media the day after Stephen Colbert signed off from CBS’ The Late Show, sharing a striking AI-generated video of the president tossing the late-night host into a dumpster.
The clip, posted on the official White House Instagram page on May 22, shows Trump walking up behind Colbert on the Ed Sullivan Theater stage, lifting him, and throwing him into a nearby trash bin. The video then depicts Trump performing his signature “fist-dance” to Y.M.C.A. by Village People, with the caption: “Bye-bye 👋.”

Colbert’s nearly 11-year run on CBS ended on May 21, with the network replacing the show with Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed. Trump also reacted on Truth Social early the next morning, writing: “Colbert is finally finished at CBS. Amazing that he lasted so long! No talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead person. You could take any person off the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness he’s finally gone!”
Hours later, Trump added a sweeping critique of late-night hosts in general, calling them “untalented, nasty, highly overpaid, not funny, and very poorly rated.”

CBS cited financial reasons for canceling The Late Show in July 2025, as its parent company Paramount merged with Skydance, requiring Trump administration approval. Colbert had openly criticized the network for settling a $16 million lawsuit with Trump and for the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Colbert commented on the White House’s reaction, saying he found it “foolish” for the president to focus on him personally. “The ending of the show aside, which people can speculate about all they want… we’re clowns,” Colbert said. “How much does it diminish the office of the presidency to even notice what we say? He needs to know how to pick his battles, metaphorically and literally.”
Reflecting on his departure from the show, Colbert acknowledged the physical and mental toll of producing a daily late-night program. “Maybe CBS saved my life because it takes a lot of bone marrow to do the show every day, and now I’ll be stepping down with enough time, enough energy to do other things that I want to do,” he said.
Despite the conclusion of The Late Show, Colbert affirmed his continued commitment to civic engagement. “I’ll never stop caring about my country,” he said. “I’m a perfectly fine fan of me, but I am not of the opinion that if my voice is missing from the national conversation, the republic will turn awry.”
Colbert’s unexpected farewell leaves viewers and colleagues reflecting on his 11-year late-night legacy, marked by humor, sharp political commentary, and cultural relevance.
